Water hyacinth and garbage on Dien Thanh beach need to be thoroughly handled.

Although it is entering the peak tourist season, Dien Thanh beach (Dien Chau district) is often polluted when garbage and water hyacinth cover the shore.

Dien Thanh Beach (Dien Chau District) is a familiar destination for people inside and outside the province thanks to its advantages of gentle sea, long beach, and a chain of restaurants and entertainment areas that have developed rapidly in recent years.

However, at present, this beach is surrounded by garbage and water hyacinth. The sea water is murky, with patches of water hyacinth floating close to the water’s edge. In many sections along the shore, the water hyacinth has dried up and piled up in layers, creating an unsightly scene.

According to records, during the recent April 30 - May 1 holiday, many sections of the beach were covered with water fern, 5-10m wide, stretching nearly 2km along the coast. Along with that, the sea water was turbid and household waste washed ashore.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Tam - a tourist from Thanh Hoa said: "My family came here to travel , let the children swim in the sea, and experience the sea space. But when seeing the beach full of garbage like this, everyone felt embarrassed and worried that swimming would affect their health. Therefore, we only use the food and entertainment services on the shore."

Not only visitors, but also locals expressed regret when witnessing a potential destination falling into this situation right on peak days. Phan Dinh Nam - a merchant attached to Dien Thanh beach, worried: "We merchants also want to build a civilized and elegant image for our hometown's beach, so we fully contribute to taxes, sanitation fees, participate in cleaning, invest in upgrading infrastructure, facilities... However, in the long run, the issue of beach hygiene can easily make Dien Thanh lose points in the eyes of tourists."

Mr. Cao Ba Phong - owner of Phong Ngu restaurant (Dien Thanh beach) shared: "The situation of duckweed and garbage in Dien Thanh is almost impossible to handle. The beach is located right next to the mouth of Lach Van river, every time it rains or storms, the river water carries duckweed and garbage from neighboring communes into the sea. The amount of duckweed accumulated in a short time, the volume is large, and it is impossible to clean up in time during the holidays".

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Tran Dang Trung - Chairman of Dien Thanh Town People's Committee said: "The district has supported Dien Thanh Town with 300 million VND to clean up the beach, we have organized the cleanup twice. However, due to the large amount of water hyacinth continuously arriving, the collection work has encountered many difficulties. Currently, the locality is monitoring the situation to continue hiring machines to handle it, because human power is not enough."

Although there has been intervention, many opinions say that to solve the problem at its root, it is necessary to block the water fern flow right from the upstream and thoroughly handle the situation of littering into the river by people in the coastal areas.

In addition, part of the waste also comes from neighboring communes when people lack awareness and dump their waste directly on the coast. This increases the pressure on environmental sanitation and makes the pollution situation even more serious.

Keeping the sea clean is not only the responsibility of the government, but also requires the participation of the community and service providers. Without a fundamental solution, raising public awareness and increasing investment in environmental sanitation, the risk of losing the opportunity to develop marine tourism in Dien Thanh is entirely possible.
