The Intergovernmental Agency for Development (IGAD) warns that the food crisis will have an increasingly severe impact across East Africa and the Horn of Africa in 2023.
According to IGAD's 2023 Food Crisis Report, up to 30 million people are expected to need humanitarian food assistance in Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Uganda. Of those 30 million people experiencing food insecurity, an estimated 7.5 million are in Kenya, Somalia, and South Sudan.
The report also noted that the ongoing conflict in Sudan threatens people's access to food, potentially leading to a rapid deterioration of food and nutritional security in the capital Khartoum and the Darfur region. This is despite the rains from March to May 2023, which partially alleviated the "thirst" following the most severe drought to affect the Horn of Africa in over four decades.
