In the middle of the coastal city of Quy Nhon, there is a field of yellow daisies by the river, so beautiful that it makes travelers feel homesick as Tet approaches.
Like the chrysanthemum capital of the Mekong Delta, Binh Dinh also has a field of yellow chrysanthemums located among high-rise buildings, on the poetic Ha Thanh river branch in the heart of the coastal city of Quy Nhon.
Quy Nhon residents often plant Tet chrysanthemums along flooded river branches to reduce pests and make care and transportation by boat more convenient.
This is also a village specializing in growing chrysanthemums for a long time in Quy Nhon city. Flower growers rely on water resources, cool air and fertile alluvium deposited along both banks of the Ha Thanh river to grow chrysanthemums for Tet.
In the days leading up to Lunar New Year, chrysanthemums are in full bloom, the ripe time for growers to export chrysanthemums to the Tet market, reaping the rewards of half a year of nurturing the flowers like a baby.
From above, the vast fields of yellow flowers, rows of straight coconut trees and the river... make anyone who comes here feel like they are lost in the chrysanthemum capital of the Western provinces such as Sa Dec City (Dong Thap), My Tho City ( Tien Giang )...
Currently, it is the ideal time to visit the flower fields in Quy Nhon, the most beautiful is still before the full moon day and the 23rd of December. After this time, the flowers are transported to the city's central square for sale or delivered to traders for export to the Central Highlands provinces.
Coming to the flower fields at this time, people can admire many different species such as marigolds, tiger daisies, gerbera daisies... but the most abundant are probably the pots of fresh, plump raspberry daisies.
A pot of chrysanthemum has hundreds of branches, green leaves below, hundreds of flower buds above forming a dome shape. When the flowers bloom, they look like a plump, golden raspberry. That is why it is called raspberry chrysanthemum.
Yellow chrysanthemums are popular during Tet because they have many meanings associated with the cultural and spiritual life of Vietnamese people. The round shape of the flower is like a wish for a prosperous, lucky, bright and happy new year.
To have flower pots that bloom evenly and brightly in time for Tet, growers must closely monitor the plants and take meticulous care of them.
It takes about 6 months for chrysanthemums to bloom from planting. When the pots have green buds turning to yellow buds, it is time for gardeners to carefully care for and nurture the flowers.
To stimulate the flowers to bloom, gardeners must water the flowers twice a day, early in the morning and late in the afternoon. The flowers are watered gently at the base to avoid bruising and waterlogging. In addition, gardeners also take the opportunity to pick off small flower buds on the main branches and secondary flowers on each pot so that when they bloom, they will be more brilliant and full.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Xuan (70 years old) is a Tet chrysanthemum grower for many years in Quy Nhon. She shared that growing chrysanthemum is the main source of income for her family and many other households. Each flower season, gardeners can grow from 500 to 1,500 pots depending on the land area. The selling price to traders ranges from 200,000 VND to 3 million VND/pot depending on the size and type.
