The photo was taken at Hibiya Park, Tokyo on July 14.

The "century plant" ( scientific name is agave americana or agave), is a species of asparagus plant, native to the Americas. The flowering time of the plant is very long, some plants take up to 100 years from planting, to bloom the first buds.

Recently, the "century tree" near the Pelican fountain in Hibiya Park, Tokyo, suddenly bloomed with clusters of yellow flowers, delighting visitors.

A park employee said that from around mid-May, the tree suddenly grew, reaching a height of 7.7 meters. On July 10, the tree bloomed its first clusters of flowers.

"I heard from experts that agave flowers only bloom for about a month or so," the employee said. However, he was not sure because he had never seen them before.

The tree shows signs of flowering from mid-May.

A female tourist who came to the park to see the flowers commented: "It is said that this flower only blooms once every several decades. We will not see this flower bloom again in our lifetime, so my family and I have to arrange to come here as soon as possible."

Local media reported that the agave plant in Hibiya Park is still continuing to bloom with many small yellow flower clusters.

"I heard the flowers were blooming so I came here to see them. The flowers are smaller than I thought. I thought they would be bigger," another visitor to the park told the Asahi newspaper.

A junior high school student added, "They say this flower only blooms once in a lifetime, so I'm grateful to see it."

Tokyo is in the midst of a summer heatwave, with the sunshine and warmth likely to spur the flowering of agave plants, meteorologists say.

This agave is estimated to be over 60 years old as there are photos of the plant taken around 1960. Hibiya Park also has another agave that bloomed in July 2019.
