The South China Morning Post reported that Xu spent 1,649 yuan (US$240) for a night at the five-star Hangzhou Conrad Hotel in Zhejiang with his girlfriend.
Pulling the curtains of the 41st floor hotel window to look at the river in the morning, Mr. Xu and his girlfriend were shocked to see a window cleaner outside staring at the naked couple.
After the incident, Mr. Xu decided to sue the Hangzhou Conrad Hotel. The man demanded an apology from the 5-star hotel for not informing guests about the window cleaning time frame. Mr. Xu also wanted the hotel to refund the room rental fee and compensate for the mental damage he and his girlfriend had suffered.

The hotel asked the couple to stay for two more days while waiting for staff to resolve the complaint. The couple stayed as requested, but after two days no hotel manager came to work with them. The couple even said that the Hangzhou Conrad Hotel charged them extra money for the extra nights.
Explaining why they did not inform customers about the window cleaning time frame, a Hangzhou Conrad communications staff member said they could not give an exact window cleaning time due to uncontrollable factors such as the weather.
Staff member Zhong further explained that it was impossible to notify every customer because they did not know what time everyone went to bed and woke up, and could only post a notice in the room to remind everyone that the windows would be cleaned "in the near future".

The story of the Xu couple quickly spread on Chinese social networks and created mixed opinions.
Some people think Xu and his girlfriend are overreacting, as they have seen the window cleaner many times. However, many people think the luxury hotel needs to be held accountable.
"I don't know if the couple was really shocked, but I'm sure the window cleaner was" - a netizen commented.
Another said: "The window cleaner must have been so embarrassed because he didn't know where to run."
"Guests have the right to be naked in their hotel rooms and of course they have the right to enjoy the beauty of the river as the hotel advertised. The hotel should compensate both the guest and the window cleaner," another person said in support of the Xu couple.
