On the afternoon of June 23, the Vietnamese men's volleyball team entered the 7th place match against Chinese Taipei at the AVC Nations Cup 2025, taking place in Manama, Bahrain. Despite a favorable start, Coach Tran Dinh Tien's players could not maintain their form and lost 1-3, ending the tournament in 8th place overall.
Rare moments of joy of the Vietnam team
Vietnam entered the match with determination and won the first set 25-21. However, Taiwan (China) quickly adjusted their tactics, promoting their strength from flank attacks and solid defense. The Northeast Asian representative came back to win the next three sets with scores of 25-22, 25-19 and 25-22, thereby closing the match with a 3-1 victory.
Taiwan (China) has a lot of experience and competitive spirit
Throughout the match, the Vietnamese team showed a resilient fighting spirit, especially in the moments when the score was tied. Key players such as Nguyen Ngoc Thuan, Nguyen Van Quoc Duy, and Quan Trong Nghia had many impressive plays, but they were not enough to make a difference against the evenly matched and experienced play of their opponents.
Previously, the Vietnamese team lost 2-3 to Indonesia in the 5th-8th qualifying round, leading to having to compete for 7th-8th place with Taiwan (China). Compared to the 6th place achievement at the AVC Challenge Cup 2024 - the predecessor tournament of the AVC Nations Cup - this result is somewhat of a regression.
However, this is still considered an important opportunity for the team under coach Tran Dinh Tien to test the squad, gain international experience and prepare for upcoming bigger tournaments.
Vietnam team still has a lot of work to do before other international tournaments
The 2025 AVC Men's Nations Cup will feature 11 teams and is an important qualifier for the 2026 Asian Championship, leading to two major events: the 2027 World Championship and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. With a ranking of only 8/11, the Vietnamese team needs to improve their tactical organization, especially their defense and first-step control – weaknesses that were clearly exposed in this tournament.
