According to SCMP , a rare incident occurred when Cathay Pacific Airlines accidentally served white wine to a 3-year-old boy sitting in business class on a flight from Hong Kong to London.
The child was reportedly traveling with his parents on the flight on April 24. He was served a glass of water and claimed it had a "sour taste".
The boy's mother quickly realized he had been given white wine and reported it to a flight attendant. The staff apologized and replaced the white wine with water.
The boy's mother - Ms. Wong - later shared the incident on Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu, expressing concerns about the possible long-term effects on her child's health from accidentally drinking alcohol.
"We understand that alcohol consumption in young children can cause delayed neurological and physiological development that may not be immediately apparent," the mother said.
She then took her child for a medical check-up and said that so far, the boy fortunately showed no unusual signs or symptoms.
"This is not a simple incident but a wake-up call for Cathay Pacific, as the inexperienced flight attendants have made many silly, incomprehensible and unreasonable mistakes," the Wong family criticized.
Cathay Pacific immediately issued an official apology and refunded the boy's ticket. Cathay Pacific also provided an upgrade voucher and agreed to cover all medical examination costs.
However, Ms. Wong's family said the airline had not provided a full explanation for the mistake or how to prevent similar incidents in the future.
"Throughout the process, my son was not cared for. They made me feel like they were trying to shirk responsibility," Ms. Wong said.
According to SCMP , Cathay Pacific has once again sent a "sincere apology", and the airline has decided since April 26 to conduct additional training programs for crew members, internal assessments to enhance service procedures and appropriate monitoring measures.
