On the afternoon of May 13, Mr. Nguyen The Duc, Vice Chairman of Duy Xuyen District People's Committee ( Quang Nam ) said that the Cau Lau bridge over Thu Bon River had just had its railing broken at a location managed by the locality. The broken location has been temporarily welded for protection.
At noon of the same day, many passersby were shocked to discover that the old Cau Lau railing bridge (the bridge on the old National Highway 1A) across the Thu Bon River connecting Dien Ban Town and Duy Xuyen District had broken, creating a large gap right on the bridge wall, posing a danger to passersby.
Part of the Cau Lau bridge railing is broken.
The fracture is located at span 8 from the south abutment. The eastern railing and handrail pillar has completely broken off with a length of 11.5 m and a height of 0.9 m. In addition, the western railing and handrail pillar also has cracks, broken concrete, exposed rusted steel, and is at risk of further collapse, causing unsafety for the bridge as well as traffic participants.
Upon receiving the information, Duy Xuyen District People's Committee directed the police and relevant units to block off, fence the cracked part of the railing and put up signs prohibiting vehicles with a load of over 5 tons from passing through the bridge to ensure safety for vehicles.
Mr. Nguyen The Duc said that the cause of the bridge railing breakage could be because Cau Lau bridge is old, during the repair process of the new Cau Lau bridge, vehicles have been pouring into the old bridge, causing pressure. On the bridge railing, there are many cables, water pipes... the process of many vehicles moving creates vibrations leading to the bridge railing breakage.
Fault location longer than 11 m

Mr. Duc said that this bridge is more than 800 m long, connecting Duy Xuyen District and Dien Ban Town, so the cost of repair and restoration is very large. Duy Xuyen District People's Committee proposed that Quang Nam Provincial People's Committee support funding and solutions for repair and renovation. At the same time, load testing should be conducted to determine the traffic load limit, or hand over this bridge to the Department of Transport for management and operation.
