Wilson Isidor is now a mainstay of Sunderland. |
The 25-year-old, born in Rennes, has been a standout performer at French youth level but has never been called up to the senior team. Haiti's 2-0 win over Nicaragua to secure a direct World Cup berth opens up a whole new option for Isidor. This is only the second time in history that a Caribbean team has appeared at the biggest stage of the world, having first appeared in 1974.
However, the story is not simply about the jersey or the opportunity to participate in the prestigious tournament. Haiti is currently immersed in serious violence and instability. Since the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in 2021, the capital Port-au-Prince has been almost controlled by armed gangs. The head coach of the Haiti team, Mr. Sebastien Migne, also admitted that he could not live here because of the level of danger.
In an interview with France Football , Migne said bluntly: "It's impossible to stay there, it's too dangerous. I always live in the country I lead, but not this time. There are no international flights landing there." For security reasons, he was forced to work remotely and asked the Haitian Football Federation to help with information about the players.
If Isidor chooses to represent Haiti, he will not be alone. Two Premier League players – Jean-Ricner Bellegarde (Wolves) and Hannes Delcroix (Burnley) – have been key players for the national team under Migne.
