ChatGPT continues to prove its dominance in the mobile AI assistant market. A new report shows that since its launch in May 2023, the app has generated more than $2 billion in global revenue from user spending on iOS and Android. In 2025 alone, the growth rate reached 673% compared to the same period last year, demonstrating the explosive demand for artificial intelligence in everyday life.
ChatGPT’s downloads have also grown impressively, with the app hitting 318 million installs this year, 2.8 times more than in 2024. India currently leads in total downloads with 13.7%, followed by the US with 10.3%. However, the US dominates in terms of spending, accounting for nearly 40% of global revenue, at an average of $10 per download. Germany is a distant second, at just 5.3%.
Compared to its competitors, ChatGPT shows an overwhelming gap in both revenue and average user spending.
While ChatGPT has built a widespread user ecosystem, Grok – Elon Musk’s chatbot – has received a lot of attention but its late launch on mobile (January 2025 on iOS and March 2025 on Android) has significantly limited revenue.
The report also comes just days after Elon Musk publicly criticized Apple for what he said was bias in the App Store toward OpenAI. However, the data shows that the gap between ChatGPT and its competitors is actually too large, far beyond both downloads and revenue.
With over $2 billion in global spending since launch and explosive growth in 2025, ChatGPT is cementing its position as the number one AI assistant app market. The gap with its competitors is not only a competitive advantage but also a testament to the popularity of AI technology in modern life.
