According to statistics from the Department of Agriculture and Environment, the province currently has about 409 species of wild animals, including 61 mammals, 239 birds, 67 reptiles and 42 amphibians. Areas with high biodiversity value such as Mau Son, Huu Lien, Bac Son, ... are home to many rare and endangered species such as musk deer, sun bears, leopards, flying civets, etc. However, illegal hunting and trading of wild animals still occurs, requiring drastic intervention from functional sectors in implementing measures to protect the balance of forest ecosystems.
Mr. Hoang Huu Hung, Head of the Provincial Forest Protection Department, said: The Department identifies propaganda, mobilization, and dissemination of laws on wildlife protection as a key task that needs to be carried out regularly. The Department directs forest protection units to innovate methods, organize signing of commitments to protect forests, and mobilize people to promptly report violations.
Since the beginning of 2025, the authorities have detected 11 violations, handled 14 subjects, collected more than 106 million VND for the budget, confiscated 444 individuals and nearly 49 kg of wild animals. |
At the same time, the forest rangers coordinated with the police and local authorities to increase forest inspection and patrol; organize management, closely monitor and inspect the activities of wild animal breeding facilities. Since the beginning of 2025, the authorities have detected 11 violations, handled 14 subjects, collected more than 106 million VND for the budget, confiscated 444 individuals and nearly 49 kg of wild animals.
In addition to focusing on handling violations, the authorities also pay attention to changing the community's awareness in protecting sustainable forest values. In Huu Lien commune, where there are more than 6,200 hectares of natural forest and 63 rare animal species listed in the Vietnam Red Book, propaganda work is regularly maintained by local authorities and functional agencies. Mr. Hoang Minh Tien, Vice Chairman of the Commune People's Committee, said: In recent years, the commune has always maintained propaganda on forest and wildlife protection in many forms. Since the beginning of 2025, the commune has broadcast more than 140 propaganda sessions on loudspeakers and integrated wildlife protection content into village activities and mass organizations. Thanks to that, people's awareness has changed significantly, illegal hunting and captivity almost no longer occurs.
In many other localities, forest protection associated with the conservation of rare animals has also become a way of life for the community. Ms. Duong Thi Ut Nham, Deputy Head of the Chi Lang Regional Forest Protection Department, said: The Department is in charge of 6 communes with large areas of natural forest, so it regularly incorporates propaganda on forest and wildlife protection in village meetings. At the end of August 2025, the Department combined the distribution of seedlings with direct propaganda on not hunting, illegal captivity and how to report violations, helping people both develop sustainable livelihoods and raise awareness of conservation. The Department currently manages 18 facilities for raising wild animals. Since the beginning of 2025, the Department has organized 3 inspections, and all facilities have strictly complied with regulations.
In addition to the forest rangers, the local police also actively participate in wildlife protection. Captain Hoang Duc Dat, Deputy Head of Thien Long Commune Police, shared: From July 1, 2025 to now, the commune police have coordinated with the forest rangers to organize more than 20 propaganda sessions in villages and schools about legal regulations and the harmful effects of hunting and consuming wild animals. Thereby, people's awareness of compliance and responsibility for protecting the forest has been significantly raised.
Currently, the provincial forestry sector is implementing Circular No. 27 dated June 24, 2025 of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment on the management of endangered, precious and rare species and the implementation of the CITES Convention (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), creating a unified legal corridor for conservation work. Thanks to the synchronous coordination between forces and authorities at all levels, the province's wildlife protection work has made a clear change.
Mr. Hoang Van Tuan, Quang Hong block, Luong Van Tri ward shared: My family has just switched to raising civets. When I was instructed by the authorities, I proactively went to the local Forest Protection Department to register and complete the documents according to regulations. Doing it in accordance with the law helps me feel secure in developing the economy and also makes it easier to expand the scale in the future.
Keeping the forest green is not only a conservation task, but also a matter of preserving life, protecting ecological balance and moving towards sustainable development. The efforts of the rangers, the government and the people of Lang Son today are practical actions to preserve biodiversity for future generations.
