Mr. Phan Minh Hiep, Thoi Phuoc 1 Hamlet, Truong Thanh Commune, Can Tho City, takes care of the cows to help them gain weight quickly.

When he first started raising cows, he didn’t have much experience, so he had to learn as he went. In 2015, taking advantage of the vacant land next to his house, he built a barn and bought a pair of French cows to try raising them. Hiep shared: “I chose tall, smooth-haired cows weighing about 200kg for easy care. Through participating in training courses, I vaccinated the cows myself against some common diseases, such as dermatitis, foot-and-mouth disease, deworming, tapeworms, etc., so I didn’t have to worry about the risk of disease during the raising process, just focusing on fattening the cows.”

To ensure an abundant food source for the cows, every day, Mr. Hiep cuts vegetables and fresh grass, washes them, and stores them; adds industrial feed, soybean meal, and gives the cows water continuously to help them gain weight quickly. The cows are kept in the barn regularly, and do not move or exercise much, so Mr. Hiep pays attention to cleaning the barn, limiting insects and disease outbreaks. The first pair of cows sold profitably, so Mr. Hiep boldly invested capital to raise 4, then 8 breeding cows each batch.

According to Mr. Hiep, raising French cows is more effective than raising pigs because the cost of feed is low, there are few diseases, the demand for output is stable, there is no worry about market overcrowding or price pressure. Introduced to borrow 70 million VND to cover the cost of raising cows, Mr. Hiep participated in short-term training courses, taught animal husbandry, and visited cow raising models organized by the Commune Farmers' Association to learn and accumulate experience. After raising cows for about 1 year, reaching a weight of 500kg/cow, Mr. Hiep sold them for about 45 million VND/cow, depending on the current price. About 1 week after selling the beef cows, Mr. Hiep started cleaning, spraying pesticides to prevent diseases, repairing the barn and quickly re-herding. Mr. Hiep said: "In the near future, when I am considered for an increase in loan capital, I will expand the barn to raise more cows."

Mr. Phan Van Cau, Head of the Savings and Loan Group of Thoi Phuoc 1 Hamlet, praised: "Mr. Hiep is diligent in business, learns from experience, and is quick to choose a suitable livestock model for his family's conditions. In order to meet the needs of production development, the locality continues to support increased loans for Mr. Hiep to expand the French cow breeding model, increase income, and stabilize his life."
