In the fields of Na Khui village, people are busy preparing the land and taking care of the lush green vegetable beds. Having been involved in winter crop production for many years, after harvesting the summer-autumn rice, Ms. Cao Thi Thu's family takes the opportunity to prepare the land and plant a new crop to take advantage of the season. This winter crop, Ms. Thu's family grows vegetables such as winter mustard greens, cabbage, cauliflower and kohlrabi.
Thanks to early planting, a part of the family's vegetable area has yielded its first harvest. Ms. Cao Thi Thu shared: "To grow winter vegetables, we have to do it early, the first vegetables of the season are easy to sell and have a high price. With the guidance of agricultural extension officers on soil preparation, planting and care techniques, the plants grow and develop well. Although it is a side crop, the winter crop brings the main source of income for the family."

In a nearby field, Mrs. Leng Thi Chim’s family is preparing land to grow cauliflower. For many years, her family has maintained growing winter vegetables to supply the school canteens in the commune, both increasing income and providing work during the off-season months.
Ms. Leng Thi Chim said: "After harvesting the summer-autumn rice, my family immediately cut the straw and made beds to grow winter vegetables. The soil here is very suitable for vegetables such as cauliflower, cabbage, radish and potatoes. These crops are easy to care for, have good yields and are easy to sell, so my family maintains winter crop production every year."

According to the plan, this winter crop, Muong Khuong commune will plant 60 hectares of various crops, of which 25 hectares are vegetables such as cabbage, kohlrabi, cauliflower, radish and leafy greens; the rest are corn and potatoes. For effective production, the commune directs the villages to make the most of the land area for two rice crops, alluvial land and areas with favorable irrigation conditions to expand the winter crop area.
Commune agricultural extension officers regularly go to the fields to provide technical guidance on soil preparation, bed making, fertilizing, planting on the right time frame and pest control. For vegetables, people are required to pay attention to watering, weeding regularly, and using tarps to prevent frost. For potatoes, it is recommended to use disease-free seeds, plant in rows, make high beds to avoid waterlogging, cover with straw to maintain soil moisture, ensure tubers develop evenly, and give high yields.

In addition, Muong Khuong commune also promotes propaganda and mobilizes people to produce goods, forming specialized areas associated with product consumption links. Currently, the commune is coordinating with businesses and cooperatives inside and outside the province to build a safe vegetable supply chain, bringing products to school kitchens, wholesale markets and supermarkets.
Mr. Pham Duc Trung - Vice Chairman of Muong Khuong Commune People's Committee, said: "Muong Khuong has favorable climate and soil conditions for vegetable growth. The locality is oriented to build a commercial vegetable area, while strengthening product consumption links so that people can feel secure in production."
The vegetable, potato and corn beds have turned green, and people are diligently taking care of them, promising a bumper crop. With proactive production planning, specific technical guidance and appropriate consumption solutions, this year's winter crop in Muong Khuong is expected to be highly effective. Winter crop production not only contributes to increasing the value per unit of cultivated land, but also helps the locality effectively exploit the advantages of climate and land, towards sustainable development of commodity agriculture .
