Countering the distorted arguments about military service, part 1: Psychological manipulation "tricks" of bad elements

Việt NamViệt Nam04/06/2024

Every year, when localities carry out military recruitment, bad information appears on social networks, defaming military recruitment activities and the military environment. This more or less affects the image of the Vietnam People's Army and Public Security, causing some people to waver, shake their faith, leading to negative actions...

Surely many people still have not forgotten the case of soldier Tran Duc Do, born in 2000, a student at Military School of Military Region 1, who died three years ago. Immediately after the incident, 4 units participated in the investigation, including: Criminal Investigation Department of Military Region 1; Criminal Investigation Department, Ministry of National Defense ; Security Protection Department, Ministry of National Defense and Thai Nguyen Provincial Police, with a unified conclusion: There were no signs of incitement, pressure, humiliation, no conflicts within the unit, family, male-female relationships, no gambling, no debt. Especially, there was no case of Mr. Tran Duc Do being beaten or assaulted.

However, despite the investigation conclusions of the authorities, many social networking sites have posted false information about the incident. The posts appeared with high density, across groups, pages, forums, Facebook pages such as: Viet Tan, Nhat ky yeu nuoc, Chan troi moi media... The groups, pages, Facebook pages also continuously broadcast live videos of the funeral of soldier Tran Duc Do, showing images of the autopsy, injuries on the victim's body... with an agitated, indignant tone, claiming that the victim's death was unusual, demanding that the authorities clarify.

In the same way, in 2023, the case of conscript Luu Thien M., 19 years old, from Thai Nguyen , who died just 10 days after joining the Mobile Police Battalion No. 3, Northwestern Mobile Police Regiment, Mobile Police Command, stationed in Yen Bai province, was an opportunity for many bad elements to take advantage of and distort the truth.

Based on the results of the crime scene investigation, forensic examination, and soldier M.’s diary, the authorities determined that there were no signs of beating, assault, or murder. Through investigation, the authorities determined that M. had suffered from paranoia for many years and climbed up the antenna pole, then jumped off and died.

However, at the time of the incident, there was a lot of false information circulating online, causing public confusion. Many families and young people of military service age were a bit worried, hesitant, and did not want to join the military.

Especially every year, before the time of military service examination, there often appears a lot of "bad" and "toxic" information related to the implementation of military service, aiming to sabotage, attack, and defame the image of the Vietnamese armed forces. While localities are actively preparing to organize military service handover ceremonies, it is also the time when reactionary elements are actively operating, they continuously launch sabotage tricks and offensive arguments.

Mr. Hoang Ngoc Hoa, Chairman of the Provincial Veterans Association, said: On social networks, staged and edited images and videos, with fabricated, defamatory, and slanderous words, are posted a lot. Most of the accounts are overseas, they impersonate to spread psychological manipulations that undermine the revolutionary ideals and the spirit of participating in protecting the Fatherland of the youth.

As Mr. Hoa said, in the current era of information technology development, bad elements have taken full advantage of social networks to defame, attack, and carry out bad tricks and plots on cyberspace to divide the great national unity bloc, distorting the nature and good traditions of our Army. Many websites post content such as: "In peacetime, young people are not obliged to join the military", "how to avoid joining the military", "unjust death in the army", "old soldiers, young soldiers", "old ghosts bullying new ghosts", "stories in the army", "who dares to join the army"...

In particular, when incidents like the two cases we mentioned above occur, hostile forces and bad elements quickly seize the opportunity to take advantage of the situation to spread false information in order to "steer" public opinion in a negative direction. The words they post and comment on cyberspace are often ambiguous, without any specific military unit address, with slanderous and derogatory words, causing some people to be suspicious, "self-evolve", "self-transform".

More dangerously, some pages also post scenes of violence in foreign armies, then comment distorting that it is happening in the Vietnamese army. Many images and videos are blatantly edited and staged, not true. In the posts, on the one hand, they deny the importance of performing military service, on the other hand, they smear that the selection of new recruits to join the army is unfair, that they have to endure hardship, exploitation, beatings...

This is essentially the ideology of those with childish thinking, a psychological "trick" and a tactic of bad elements, with the intention of sabotaging the armed forces in particular, and the Party and State in general. They aim to defame the history of thousands of years of struggle to build and defend the country of our people, deliberately tarnishing the image, nature and good traditions of our people.

False, distorted, and fabricated information about military service is released, like “poison” affecting the thoughts, spirit, and will of some people. To easily achieve their goals, they “hit” the gullible people, remote areas, ethnic minority areas, especially families with children of military service age. And they have been more or less successful when many people are confused and worried about that information.

In fact, there have been some people who have left comments on pages and groups that show hesitation, even sycophancy and agitation. The most negative manifestation is that some young people are afraid of being beaten, afraid of difficulties and hardships, and are lax about their responsibilities, rights and obligations to the Fatherland. Some have tried to avoid it when the Fatherland calls their name.

Typically, in the 2024 military service recruitment, citizen VVT, born in 2005, permanent resident of Quang Son commune, Dak Glong district, Dak Nong province. After passing the medical examination, he was found to be healthy enough to perform his duty in the People's Public Security, but because he did not want to perform his duty, T. got a tattoo on his left arm with the intention of being eliminated in the next health check.

And as expected, the Dak Nong Provincial Police Health Review Council removed T. from the list of people who were required to join the People's Police because he did not meet the standards. Also in the 2024 military recruitment season, Thieu Hoa district, Thanh Hoa province, had 28 young men who violated the call for military service health check-ups.

In addition, recently, there have been many cases nationwide that have taken advantage of the State's policies and "circumvented the law" to leave their place of residence during the time of military and police conscription examination. One of their tricks is that although their permanent residence is in one locality, they register temporary residence in another locality during the time when the authorities call citizens to join the army.

There are also cases of people deliberately falsifying their health status to avoid military service such as: using drugs to increase blood pressure, increase pulse, drinking coffee continuously, staying up all night, fasting... before going for a health check. Or some people pretend to have poor eyesight, intentionally reading incorrectly. There are also cases of people preparing sugar water in advance to put into a test tube when taking urine to distort the sugar ratio in the urine...

According to Colonel Ma Cong Hoc, Political Commissar of the Provincial Military Command: Although Thai Nguyen is a province that does a good job in selecting and calling citizens to join the army every year, there are still cases of people avoiding military service. In fact, there is still conflicting information, although not public, surrounding the implementation of military service. Through understanding the situation, we see that there are still situations, even though they are small, where young people have the mindset that in peacetime they do not need to join the military service, or that young people should focus on making a living instead of wasting time participating in military service of some individuals and families. From there, they find ways to avoid military service...
