Proactively prevent yellow-backed bamboo locusts

Việt NamViệt Nam01/07/2024

Currently, the province has not recorded any cases of yellow-backed bamboo locusts causing damage to agricultural and forestry crops. However, this is a type of insect that can develop quickly, cause strong damage, is difficult to control, and greatly affects crop productivity and output; localities and specialized agencies in the province have proactively implemented prevention measures.

The yellow-backed bamboo locust is a polyphagous insect with great destructive power, mainly causing damage to weeds, bamboo forests, and rattan. In some northern mountainous provinces such as Cao Bang , Lang Son, Dien Bien, and Son La, the yellow-backed bamboo locust is developing strongly with high density and large areas. In particular, in Cao Bang province, the yellow-backed bamboo locust has damaged over 800 hectares of agricultural and forestry trees and the province has had to declare an epidemic in 3 districts: Nguyen Binh, Hoa An, and Thach An.
In Lai Chau province, in 2020 and 2021, the yellow-backed bamboo locust appeared and damaged crops in 2 districts: Muong Te and Nam Nhun. The total area damaged on bamboo, reed, and wild banana trees is 10.5 hectares; damaged 1 hectare of upland rice. From 2022 to now, the yellow-backed bamboo locust has not reappeared to cause damage, but the risk is very high. To proactively prevent and control the yellow-backed bamboo locust, on June 5, 2024, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development issued Official Dispatch No. 1194/SNN-TT&BVTV on proactively monitoring and controlling the yellow-backed bamboo locust.

People in Doan Ket village (Phong Tho town, Phong Tho district) regularly visit their fields to detect pests and bamboo locusts early for prevention.

To implement this document, the People's Committees of districts and cities direct specialized agencies and People's Committees of communes and towns to strengthen propaganda and instruct people on how to recognize, the harm and measures to prevent and control yellow-backed bamboo locusts. The Forest Protection Department directs the Forest Protection Departments of districts and cities to coordinate with the Protection Forest Management Board and the People's Committees of communes and towns to regularly monitor the area, detect and grasp the situation of movement and damage caused by locust swarms in the bamboo, rattan, reed, and reed forests. Thereby, promptly informing and reporting to the District People's Committees to direct and implement preventive measures to prevent widespread spread. The Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection closely coordinates with specialized agencies under the People's Committees of districts and cities to inspect and grasp the situation; advise and guide timely and effective preventive measures.
Comrade Nguyen Duc Duyen - Deputy Head of the Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection (Department of Agriculture and Rural Development) said: “We proactively monitor the locust situation in neighboring provinces to promptly advise and direct prevention and control. Coordinate well in propaganda work so that people can raise their vigilance, actively participate, and absolutely not be subjective or negligent. At the same time, strengthen inspection and remind the business and use of plant protection drugs in districts and cities, especially in the San Thang market area ( Lai Chau city). Determined not to trade in fake drugs, drugs that do not ensure quality, drugs not on the list, drugs of unknown origin and increase drug prices".
At this time, people from lowland to highland border areas regularly check rice, corn, bamboo and rattan planting areas. Especially, for the 3 districts: Phong Tho, Nam Nhun, Sin Ho, through the investigation process, grasping the movement direction of bamboo locusts, it is determined that these are places with higher risks, prevention is more focused.
Present at the lush green corn field, in the flowering stage of Doan Ket village (Phong Tho town, Phong Tho district), we saw quite a few people visiting the field. Mr. Mang Van Doan confided: This spring-summer crop, my family planted 1ha of corn. When we first planted it, the weather was dry, the corn could not grow, fortunately there were some summer rains to save it, now the corn is basically growing evenly, flowering, and producing cobs. Currently, there are no pests causing much damage, but because of the propaganda from experts about the risk of yellow-backed bamboo locusts causing damage, my family has sent someone to visit the field every day. On busy days, my husband and I take advantage of the late afternoon to go to each area to check. Hopefully, the corn will grow well, be protected, and produce high yields.
According to experts, the yellow-backed bamboo locust is a dangerous pest because of its ability to cause damage in swarms on many crops. When mature, the locust moves quickly and has a wide range of damage (each move is usually about a few kilometers). Bamboo locusts often cause a lot of damage from April to September every year. To effectively prevent it, it is necessary to destroy it immediately when it is young, newly hatched, living in small groups, moving slowly and causing local damage.
People apply measures to kill locusts in the following order: use nets to catch them for poultry to eat, soak them in compost or destroy them; use biological and chemical pesticides to spray. The sprayed pesticides must contain the following active ingredients: Imidacloprid 2 (Anvado 100WP), Thiosultap-sodium/Nereistoxin (Neretox 95WP), Emamectin benzoate + Lufenuron (Lufen extra 100EC). Note that when spraying, spray in a surrounding or rolling manner to increase effectiveness. Use pesticides safely and effectively according to the "4 rights" principle: right pesticide, right time, right concentration, right dosage and right way.
