As reported by the People's Representative Newspaper, tonight, April 26, at Song Hau Park, Ninh Kieu District, on behalf of the Party and State leaders, Politburo member and National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man attended and delivered a speech at the 50th Anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification (April 30, 1975 - April 30, 2025) organized by Can Tho City.
All policies and strategies must originate from the legitimate interests and happiness of the people.
Speaking at the ceremony, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man and delegates, compatriots and comrades reviewed the heroic historical days of April of the whole nation. 50 years ago, under the wise leadership of the Party, the direct guidance of the Central Office for Southern Vietnam, the Southwest Region Party Committee, and Military Region 9, the army and people of Can Tho simultaneously launched an attack and uprising, seizing power on April 30, 1975, contributing significantly to the Great Spring Victory of 1975, completely liberating the South, unifying the country; gloriously ending the longest, most arduous and greatest resistance war in the history of our nation against foreign invaders; bringing the country together, the North and the South reunited, the country filled with joy, entering an era of independence, unity, peace and development.
After the country's reunification, Can Tho, like many localities in the Southwest region, faced numerous difficulties and shortages, but the Party Committee, government and people of Can Tho continued to join hands, unite, overcome difficulties, and develop, with appropriate policies and solutions, promptly responding to practical requirements.
In particular, after more than 20 years under the Central Government, the National Assembly Chairman acknowledged that Can Tho has had positive changes, the appearance of the city has changed positively from urban to rural, many prosperous and peaceful villages, many modern works, many large-scale projects have been and are in operation, the city has been and is an attractive destination for many domestic and foreign tourists and investors.
The city's economic growth rate is quite high; the economic scale continues to expand, the total product in the city in 2024 will reach over 133 trillion VND; domestic revenue will reach over 12 trillion VND; average income per capita will reach 109 million VND.
The fields of culture, society, education, health care and implementation of social security policies have made positive progress. The material and spiritual life of the people has been constantly improved and enhanced. The work of preventing and combating corruption, waste and negativity has been strictly implemented; national defense and security have been maintained; foreign affairs activities have created strong impressions.
"This is an important and fundamental foundation, creating momentum for Can Tho to confidently and steadily develop in the coming time," the National Assembly Chairman emphasized, at the same time, on behalf of the Party and State leaders, acknowledging, appreciating and praising the achievements that the Party Committee, government and people of the city have achieved in recent times.
In the common joy of Can Tho and the whole country, the National Assembly Chairman also shared some concerns, in which the city's development has not been commensurate with its potential and advantages, and has not met the development requirements of centrally-run cities; suggesting that Can Tho, entering a new phase, must seriously learn from past shortcomings, "be innovative in thinking - creative in doing - effective in implementation".
The National Assembly Chairman requested the city to focus highly, ensure solidarity and unity, promptly, synchronously and effectively implement the policies of the Party and Government, laws and resolutions of the National Assembly on the arrangement of administrative units, carry out the revolution in personnel organization and growth targets; best prepare for the Party Congresses at all levels for the 2025-2030 term; and elect deputies to the 16th National Assembly and People's Councils at all levels for the 2026-2031 term.
Can Tho exploits and maximizes the potential and advantages of the locality and region; focuses on developing green economy, digital economy, circular economy, knowledge economy, sharing economy, private economy. Accelerates the development of science and technology, innovation and digital transformation, widely and substantially deploys the movement "Digital Education for All".
Economic development must go hand in hand with cultural and social development; taking care of people's health, developing tourism; international cooperation; developing education and training, creating high-quality human resources; attaching importance to learning and improving people's knowledge, as General Secretary To Lam's recent article on "Lifelong Learning" stated.
The National Assembly Chairman requested Can Tho to take care of building clean and strong Party organizations at all levels; strictly, regularly and continuously implement the work of preventing and combating corruption, waste and negativity.
Reiterating President Ho Chi Minh's advice that "all successes or failures depend on good or bad cadres", the National Assembly Chairman emphasized that Can Tho must build a team of cadres and party members equal to the new tasks.
The National Assembly Chairman also noted that socio-economic development must be closely combined with building a solid national defense and security posture, building a strong national defense and people's security; improving the quality of people's lives, listening to people's thoughts and opinions, all policies and strategies must stem from the aspirations, legitimate interests and happiness of the people.
The National Assembly Chairman believes that the Party Committee, the Government and the People of Can Tho City will continue to unite and join forces, turning difficulties into motivation, turning challenges into opportunities; Can Tho will develop more and more, soon becoming a smart, rich, civilized and modern city; wishing the Party Committee, the Government and the People of Can Tho City to achieve more new successes and new victories.
Determined to develop Can Tho city into the center of the region
On behalf of the Party Committee, Government and People of Can Tho City, Secretary of the City Party Committee Do Thanh Binh respectfully thanked and seriously accepted the direction of National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man, concretized it into the program and plan to continue to lead, direct, organize effective implementation, determined to build and develop Can Tho City to become the center of the Region, a civilized and modern ecological city, imbued with the cultural identity of the Mekong Delta river region, worthy of the trust of the Party, the expectations of the leaders, former leaders and people of the city, continuing to contribute more to the common development of the country, firmly entering the new era.
At the ceremony, on behalf of Can Tho City veterans, Colonel Tran Thanh Nghiep, former Deputy Commander of Can Tho Provincial Military Command, former member of the Standing Committee of Can Tho City Party Committee shared that what remained in today's ceremony was the spreading camaraderie, deep gratitude, the more time passes, the more the significance and significance of this great historical event never fades but shines more and more in the cause of innovation, construction and protection of the Fatherland. The spirit and spirit of the Great Victory of Spring 1975 are still being continued by generations of veterans to join the entire Party, the entire army and the entire people to continue writing the brilliant pages of history of the country and the nation in the new era.
Colonel Tran Thanh Nghiep affirmed that, despite their old age and wherever they are, the veterans, with love and responsibility, are determined to continue to devote their strength and intelligence to the development of the country; actively participate in movements and campaigns for the goal of a rich people, a strong country, democracy, fairness and civilization; have a high responsibility in educating the younger generation in patriotism; truly be a trustworthy political force, a solid bridge between the Party, the State and the people, and a core force contributing to protecting the Party's ideological foundation. At the same time, he hoped that today's young generation must live, study, work and contribute in a way worthy of the noble sacrifices of their ancestors, striving to build a prosperous and happy country, firmly protecting the socialist Vietnamese Fatherland.
After the ceremony, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man and delegates enjoyed a special art program with the theme "Can Tho - Continuing the Spring Epic".
