50 years ago, under the wise and talented leadership of the Party, implementing the strategic determination of the Politburo, the Central Military Commission and the General Command, with the spirit of "Lightning speed, boldness, sure victory", "One day is equal to 20 years", the army and people of the whole country heroically overcame all hardships and sacrifices, creating the Great Victory of Spring 1975, fully implementing the guiding ideology of President Ho Chi Minh "Fight to make the Americans leave, fight to make the puppets fall", liberating the South, unifying the country, gloriously ending the long, arduous and great resistance war in the history of our nation against foreign invaders. Under the leadership of the Party and President Ho Chi Minh, with an iron will and unshakable determination, our army and people overcame countless hardships and sacrifices, writing one of the most heroic pages of the nation's history, an event of international stature and profound contemporary significance.
Years will pass, but the victory of our people in the resistance war against the US to save the country - the peak of which was the victory on April 30, 1975 - will forever be recorded in our nation's history as one of the most brilliant pages, a shining symbol of revolutionary heroism, of the bravery and intelligence of the Vietnamese people in the Ho Chi Minh era.
In the solemn atmosphere of the ceremony, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man and all delegates respectfully remembered and expressed their infinite gratitude to beloved President Ho Chi Minh - the genius leader, national liberation hero, world cultural celebrity, outstanding culturalist of Vietnam, who has brought glory to our nation and our country; recorded and expressed gratitude for the great contributions of previous generations of revolutionaries, the boundless sacrifices of heroic Vietnamese mothers, heroes of the People's Armed Forces, heroes of labor, wounded and sick soldiers, families of martyrs, and families with meritorious services to the revolution.
National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man and all delegates expressed their deep gratitude to the cadres and soldiers of the People's Army, People's Police, youth volunteers, frontline laborers...; respectfully remember and forever be grateful for the great contributions of generations of cadres, party members, and people of all walks of life in Can Tho as well as in all regions of the country who heroically fought and sacrificed for the independence and freedom of the Fatherland, for the prosperous and happy life of the people, for the longevity of the nation, for socialism and noble international obligations.
In his commemorative speech, Standing Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, Chairman of the Can Tho City People's Council Pham Van Hieu said that during the great resistance war against the US to save the country, Can Tho had a particularly important strategic position - located in the center of the Mekong Delta, where the US - puppet regime placed the headquarters of the 4th Tactical Zone with a massive war machine, many types of military branches, warehouses, airports, and ports. This was the main starting point for the enemy's fierce and savage sweeps, raids, and pacification operations to localities in the region.
Entering the Spring of 1975, although our nation’s struggle for liberation still faced many difficulties, our people’s resistance was growing stronger and stronger, and the offensive power of our army and people was growing stronger and stronger. In the South, from March 10, 1975, in order to coordinate with the newly opened Central Highlands battlefield, the army and people of the delta region simultaneously attacked and rose up in many places, expanding the liberated areas and occupying important traffic arteries.
With high political determination and preparation in all aspects, on April 27, 1975, the armed forces of Can Tho province and the main force of Military Region 9 divided into three wings to attack and approach Can Tho city. Early in the morning of April 30, 1975, the Can Tho City Inner Uprising Command ordered the forces in the inner city to rise up and simultaneously attack key targets, occupy key facilities, offices, the Airport, the Police Department, the Prison, the Radio Station, etc.
At exactly 3:00 p.m. the same day, the first declaration of the Can Tho City People's Revolutionary Committee, read by comrade Nguyen Van Luu (representative of the Can Tho City Uprising Committee), was broadcast on Can Tho Radio.
With the fierce spirit of the General Offensive and Uprising in the Spring of 1975, with the spirit of “one day is equal to 20 years”, the army and people of Can Tho simultaneously attacked and rose up, seized power, completely liberated Can Tho province, contributed significantly to the end of the historic Ho Chi Minh campaign, made the Great Victory of Spring 1975, completely liberated the South, and unified the country. This was a brilliant feat in the glorious history of the Party Committee, army and people of Can Tho, contributing to the great resistance war of the nation.
With its strategic position and central role in the Mekong Delta, over the past 50 years, especially over 20 years as a centrally-run city, the Party Committee, Government, army and people of Can Tho have promoted all potentials and strengths, strived to build and develop the city, and achieved very important achievements in all fields.
A vivid proof is that, from a difficult area with a low starting point, Can Tho has now developed more and more with an expanded economic scale; the economic structure has shifted positively in the right direction; and social resources have been increasingly mobilized for investment in building economic and social infrastructure.
The urban technical infrastructure system is invested in the direction of a central, civilized and modern urban area; the urban appearance is clearly improved, many important infrastructure projects, which have an impact on promoting the development of the city and the whole region, are being strongly implemented, contributing to further perfecting the transportation system, opening up a new space for strong development for the city in the coming time.
The cultural and social fields are constantly developing in both breadth and depth. Social security work is well implemented; the material and spiritual life of the people is constantly improved and raised. National defense and security are firmly ensured.
The work of Party building, political system building, anti-corruption, negativity and waste has been well implemented, achieving many important results. The administrative apparatus has been innovated towards streamlining, effective and efficient operation. Foreign affairs have been expanded and strengthened. The city's position has been increasingly affirmed and enhanced, creating many favorable opportunities and development motivations for the city in the period of accelerating industrialization, modernization and international integration.
That achievement was achieved on the basis of political stability, economic development and the solidarity, consensus, joint efforts and unanimity of the entire Party, government and people of Can Tho.
Having gone through the war with its pain and loss, we are more deeply aware of and appreciate the value of a peaceful life today. 50 years have passed and the heroic epic of the Great Victory of Spring 1975 is still a strong source of encouragement for the revolutionary spirit and national pride in each generation of cadres, party members, and each child of Can Tho homeland across the country.
On behalf of the Party Committee, Government and People of Can Tho City, Standing Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, Chairman of the People's Council of Can Tho City Pham Van Hieu affirmed the determination to maintain and promote the revolutionary achievements, strive to build and develop Can Tho into a civilized and modern city, always worthy of the tradition of the Party Committee and People of the heroic city of Can Tho.
