National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man receives Australian Ambassador to Vietnam Gillian Bird
At the reception, Ambassador Gillian Bird expressed her pleasure at receiving the National Assembly Chairman's time and the honor of taking on the task in the context of the two countries' relationship being in a very good period of development; in which bilateral cooperation has had strong and effective developments, evenly in both traditional fields such as politics , defense - security, trade, education - training, culture, and new fields such as climate change response, clean energy, digital transformation, science - technology and innovation. Ambassador Gillian Bird affirmed that the Australian Government considers Vietnam one of the important partners in the Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040.
Ambassador Gillian Bird thanked National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man for his interest in promoting cooperation between the two countries' parliaments, including welcoming Australian Senate President Sue Lines to visit Vietnam in 2024; affirmed that the Australian Parliament always attaches importance to cooperative relations with the Vietnamese National Assembly; and reiterated the Senate President's invitation to National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man to pay an official visit to Australia.
Ambassador Gillian Bird expressed her honor to be invited to attend the opening session of the recent National Assembly session and was impressed and admired the agenda and current efforts of the Vietnamese National Assembly in institutional reform, streamlining the apparatus, and creating a more favorable legal environment. Ambassador Gillian Bird shared that Australians love the country, culture and people of Vietnam, with about 500,000 Australian tourists choosing Vietnam as a tourist destination every year.
National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man welcomed Ambassador Gillian Bird to the National Assembly headquarters, assessing that the two countries' upgrading of relations to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in March 2024 is a favorable condition for the Ambassador to have a successful term, actively contributing to the development of stronger cooperation between the two countries.
Sending his congratulations to the Labor Party and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on their victory in the recent 48th National Assembly election, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man expressed his joy that the Vietnam-Australia relationship is at a very good time. In 2024, bilateral trade will reach more than 14 billion USD and Australia will have 660 investment projects with a total capital of more than 2 billion USD, ranking 21st out of 149 countries and territories investing in Vietnam. The National Assembly Chairman highly appreciated Australia's implementation of the Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040; suggested that the two countries promote effective economic cooperation, continue to open the market, towards the goal of bringing bilateral trade turnover to 20 billion USD and doubling two-way investment.

National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man was pleased to appreciate the positive developments in the cooperative relationship between the two countries' parliaments, through cooperation programs and delegation exchanges, especially the official visit to Vietnam by Australian Senate President Sue Lines in 2024, as well as cooperation between the Friendship Parliamentarians' Group, female parliamentarians, and young parliamentarians of both sides. The National Assembly Chairman suggested that in the coming time, the two countries' parliaments continue to exchange delegations, share experiences in law-making, and supervise the implementation of high-level agreements between the two countries.
National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man thanked the Australian Government for continuing to support Vietnam through official development assistance (ODA) projects worth about AUD 3 billion over the past 50 years, considering it a positive source of support for Vietnam's socio-economic development; projects such as Cao Lanh Bridge and My Thuan Bridge have become symbols of cooperation between the two countries. The National Assembly Chairman highly appreciated Australia's support projects that are being actively implemented in the field of climate change response in the Mekong Delta region and called on Australia to continue to support Vietnam in building essential infrastructure.
In the field of law-making, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man shared that the Vietnamese National Assembly is continuing to consider amending relevant laws to create a favorable legal environment for FDI and ODA investment projects in Vietnam as well as considering reforming laws related to litigation.
National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man appreciated the attention and support of the Australian Government for the community of about 350,000 Vietnamese people living and studying in the country; affirmed that Australia is the top choice for studying abroad for many Vietnamese families; and asked Ambassador Gillian Bird to be a bridge and have a positive voice so that Australia can continue to facilitate the Vietnamese community to live, connect and develop.
