Cluster of poisoning cases after eating Ms. Bich's toad bread: Clarifying the cause

Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health said that as of 12 noon on November 12, 316 cases of digestive disorders had been recorded after eating bread at Co Bich's Toad Bread Shop at both locations.

Of the 316 cases that came for examination and treatment, 252 were discharged; 64 cases are being treated at hospitals in the City. The health condition of the victims is temporarily stable, only 1 serious case is being treated at Gia Dinh People's Hospital, the main cause is due to underlying diseases (pneumonia, high blood pressure, atrial fibrillation).

This person was taken off the ventilator, had the endotracheal tube removed, and continued to breathe nasal oxygen.

Regarding the cause of poisoning, test results from patient samples treated at Gia Dinh People's Hospital recorded the presence of Salmonella enteritidis and Salmonella spp.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health has directed hospitals and the City Center for Disease Control to continue coordinating with the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) to conduct microbiological culture tests and gene sequencing of isolated strains to clarify the cause and factors related to this cluster of food poisoning cases.

Previously, since November 5, many people have shown signs of stomachache, diarrhea, vomiting, and fever after eating bread under the brand name "Miss Bich's Toad Bread."

Currently, the facility of Ms. Bich's toad bread at 112A Nguyen Thai Son Street, Hanh Thong Ward and branch 2 at 363 Le Quang Dinh Street, Binh Loi Trung Ward have temporarily stopped operating. The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Food Safety has taken food samples from both facilities for testing to determine the cause.

While the cause of the food poisoning after eating bread has not been found, on November 10, 50 employees of Eternal Prowess Vietnam Joint Stock Company (address 2969-2971 National Highway 1A, Ward 13, Dong Hung Thuan Ward, Ho Chi Minh City) had to be hospitalized with symptoms of nausea, abdominal pain, red skin rash, itchy face... after eating lunch at the company. Currently, most of these people have been discharged from the hospital in stable condition.

Initial preliminary investigation shows that Eternal Prowess Vietnam Joint Stock Company provided 410 meals for employees at noon on November 10. The meals were contracted by the company with another enterprise to organize a kitchen at the enterprise and have a certificate of food safety eligibility. The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Food Safety is verifying, investigating and taking samples for analysis to find the cause of the incident./.
