Since early May, a 12-hectare field in Viet Tien Commune, Thach Ha District, Ha Tinh Province has been bustling with people harvesting and selling melons, cantaloupes, and watermelons. Previously, this field produced rice, but due to difficulties in water resources and low efficiency, 50 households switched to growing melons.
Mr. Dau Son, residing in Viet Yen village (Viet Tien commune) shared that his family grows more than 3 sao of melons. This year, the weather is favorable, the family estimates to earn nearly 40 million VND after deducting expenses.
This year's melon prices are higher than previous years. Specifically, cantaloupe costs from 15,000 - 20,000 VND/kg, melon 20,000 - 25,000 VND/kg, watermelon ranges from 10,000 - 15,000 VND/kg.
According to the People's Committee of Viet Tien Commune, the conversion of ineffective rice fields to growing melons in recent years has brought about positive results. On average, one sao of melons generates revenue of 10 - 15 million VND, many times higher than growing rice. Therefore, in the near future, the commune will continue to encourage the expansion of melon growing areas on a large scale, in association with enterprises and cooperatives.
