On the afternoon of December 15th, the Vietnam U22 team secured a 2-0 victory against the Philippines U22 team with goals from Le Van Thuan (89th minute) and Nguyen Thanh Nhan (90+2 minute) at the Rajamangala Stadium.
Winning in the semi-finals secured Vietnam U22's place in the SEA Games 33 final.
Expert Phan Anh Tú commented that this was a victory achieved through calculated personnel choices by coach Kim Sang Sik. Both goal scorers came on as substitutes and sealed the match at crucial moments.
"In the first half, the Philippine players showed very good technical and tactical qualities. They controlled the game, while the Vietnam U22 team proactively played defensively and counter-attacked, waiting for opportunities."
It must be said that when they were in good physical condition, the opponents fully displayed their qualities such as technique, one-on-one tackling, speed, and the ability to closely mark Dinh Bac or Khuat Van Khang.
However, in the second half, from the 60th minute onwards, we saw that the Philippine players were no longer able to maintain the aforementioned crucial element. In many plays, they lacked sufficient attacking players, made positional errors, and showed clear signs of fatigue. At this point, coach Kim Sang Sik brought in his substitutes.
Although they are called substitutes, they are no different from the starting lineup of the Vietnam U22 team. Coach Kim Sang Sik understands the players' abilities and knows how to maximize their effectiveness.
Coach Kim Sang Sik's substitutions were all purposeful, not made out of necessity or because players were running out of steam. Thanks to the depth of the squad and the evenly distributed fitness levels, the Vietnam U22 team took the lead.
Dinh Bac remained in excellent form until the end of the match, while Nguyen Phi Hoang still maintained his accuracy in crosses from the left wing. Le Van Thuan, who scored with a header in the 89th minute, was the biggest difference-maker with his precise header.
The Vietnam U22 team needs to improve their finishing, focusing on finesse to achieve results rather than just creating a large number of scoring opportunities. I think the final match against Thailand U22 would be more exciting. That's also what football fans want – a great game."
