On the morning of November 21, in Hanoi , the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (Academy) in collaboration with the Russian Academy of Sciences - Far Eastern Branch organized a workshop to report on the preliminary results of the second joint Vietnam-Russian Federation survey trip in Vietnam's waters by the scientific research vessel "Academician Lavrentyev" (in person and online).
Attending the workshop, on the Vietnamese side were Dr. Nguyen Xuan Anh, Director of the Institute of Earth Sciences (Academy); Dr. Le Quynh Lien, Head of the International Cooperation Department (Academy). On the Russian side were Academician Yury Kulchin, Vice President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, President of the Far Eastern Branch (online); Associate Professor, Doctor of Science Renat Belalovich Shakirov, Head of the Survey Team. Also attending were representatives of leaders of relevant departments, ministries, branches and units and all Vietnamese-Russian scientists who conducted the above scientific survey trip.
Scientific activities have special significance
Speaking at the opening of the workshop, Dr. Nguyen Xuan Anh, Director of the Institute of Earth Sciences, affirmed: The second joint survey trip between Vietnam and the Russian Federation on the continental shelf of Vietnam by the research vessel "Academician Lavrentyev" is a scientific activity of special significance, marking a new step forward in the cooperation in offshore survey between the Institute of Earth Sciences and the Pacific Oceanographic Institute (Russian Academy of Sciences) named after Academician VI Il'ichev of FEBRAS.
The survey was deployed and carried out from October 20 to November 21, 2025, in conditions where the East Sea continuously experienced large waves, strong winds and storms. However, the research teams of the two countries coordinated closely, adjusted the plan flexibly and ensured absolute safety for the entire survey team throughout the journey. In particular, the survey team collected a large number of deep-sea sediment samples on the Vietnamese continental shelf with high density, an important addition to the field data source which is still very limited in this area. These are specimens of great scientific value, contributing to the understanding of the natural characteristics of the continental shelf and supporting the development of long-term research orientations on the sea and ocean.

On behalf of the leadership of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Academician Yury Kulchin, Vice President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, congratulated the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. 50 years is a meaningful journey, marked by outstanding scientific achievements and the Academy's positive contributions to the socio-economic development of Vietnam. Moreover, 2025 is also a special year, marking the 75th anniversary of the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the Russian Federation.
In 2025, scientists from the two countries organized two joint marine surveys. This was also the 100th survey of the Pacific Geological Institute, dedicated to Professor Anatoly Ivanovich Ashirov - who has spent more than 40 years participating in geological and gas-chemical research in Vietnam's seas. The goal of this joint survey is to conduct comprehensive studies on geology, geophysics and oceanography in the East Sea; solve problems related to the conditions and mechanisms of formation of three important sedimentary basins; study gas flows and the nature of crystalline rocks. From there, it will help scientists contribute to the development of basic and applied science, for the benefit of both countries.
At the workshop, the reports of the delegates from the two countries showed that the initial results of the second joint survey were very encouraging, attracting the attention of many delegates attending in person and online. Typical examples include: Preliminary report on sediment results, the second collection of sediment samples in Vietnam; Preliminary report on the results of the second Lavrentyev survey in Russia; Research on the distribution of basalts in the East Sea from geophysical data; Gas geochemical field in surface sediments in the deep southwest area of the East Sea...

Through discussions and direct exchanges, delegates also acknowledged and highly appreciated the results achieved in more than a month of continuous work at sea by the members of the delegation. Specifically, the survey team completed dozens of geophysical and oceanographic measurement lines with a total length of thousands of kilometers; collected hundreds of sediment, seawater and gas geochemical samples. The team also recorded many gas geochemical anomalies, signs of sediments containing methane and light hydrocarbons, along with valuable geophysical and oceanographic data. These results contributed to supplementing the database on geology and resources of Vietnam's continental shelf, while improving the capacity of deep-sea research and international cooperation of the two Academies...
International cooperation is a top priority
In her closing speech at the workshop, Dr. Le Quynh Lien, Head of the International Cooperation Department, affirmed: International cooperation, especially scientific cooperation with the Russian Federation, has always been one of the top priorities of the Academy. The success of the workshop is also an important milestone, opening up new opportunities for Vietnam's marine research. In addition, the initial results of this survey also demonstrate the pioneering role of the Institute of Earth Sciences in promoting interdisciplinary research on the sea and continental shelf, especially the scientific approach to deep sea areas - a strategic space for research and long-term marine economic development of Vietnam.

In the coming time, the Academy will continue to facilitate and provide maximum support for marine research programs across the continental shelf, while gradually expanding scientific research activities to deep-sea areas - research spaces with great potential, playing an important role in Vietnam's marine development strategy; Promote the development of a national marine database system in a synchronous manner, effectively serving the work of forecasting, resource management, marine spatial planning and ensuring marine security and safety; Further promote the scientific cooperation strategy between Vietnam and the Russian Federation, towards large-scale, stable and long-term research programs, making practical contributions to scientific progress and the common interests of the two countries...
