Opportunity to develop specialized durian export growing areas

In 2025, durian exports will face difficulties because importing countries, especially the large Chinese market, are being tightened by technical barriers. However, in the 2025 harvest, durian from Dong Nai in particular and the Southeast provinces in general will still be purchased by traders to supply the export market.

Durian from the Southeast provinces has little or no cadmium contamination - one of the current export barriers. In addition, the Southeast region is famous for its delicious fruit quality, including durian. In particular, the Dona durian variety has many advantages, so it is priced about 20,000 VND/kg higher than the Ri6 variety, a strong durian export variety today.

Rapid development of specialty durian varieties

By the end of 2024, the total durian area in the Southeast region will reach about 25.4 thousand hectares with a total output of more than 150.3 thousand tons, accounting for 12.6% of the country's total output. The durian area is increasing rapidly in the Southeast region. Specifically, the durian area in Dong Nai will reach more than 12.6 thousand hectares, nearly double that of a few years ago. According to statistics from the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Binh Phuoc province, by the end of 2024, the total durian area in Binh Phuoc province will reach about 5.3 thousand hectares, with an output of about 14.8 thousand tons.

In particular, the Southeast region in general, and Dong Nai province in particular, has the advantage of rapidly developing the area of Dona specialty durian. Dona durian is occupying the largest area with more than 50% of the total durian area of Dong Nai. This is the most famous durian specialty variety of Dong Nai, produced by Dona Techno Biotechnology Development Joint Stock Company in Long Khanh city, and has been included in the national variety set. This specialty brand is not only known to domestic consumers, but is also the first durian specialty variety of Vietnam exported to the US market. Currently, Dona durian is not only widely grown in the province, but also in many provinces and cities across the country, of which it is grown a lot in the Southeast region.

Director of Phu Son Agricultural Service Cooperative (Tan Phu district) Tran Van Son said that Dona durian is more difficult to care for than some other durian varieties. However, the soil in Tan Phu district in particular, and many other areas of Dong Nai in general, is quite suitable for the development of Dona durian. Accordingly, the locality is focusing on developing this durian variety. This is a specialty variety with good quality, so the selling price is much higher than the general market price. Specifically, Dona durian is bought by traders at a price about 20 thousand VND/kg higher than Ri6 durian.

Thinh Bach Import Export Company Limited ( Ho Chi Minh City) is a durian exporter with a large output. The company is making efforts to connect with durian growing areas in the Southeast to find sources of durian that meet export standards.

Director of Thinh Bach Import Export Company Limited, Tran Thi Thanh Dung, commented that Dona durian has a more delicious quality than many other durian varieties; a characteristic aroma, thick and dry durian flesh, the seeds can be separated from the flesh without sticking to the hands, and a rich sweet taste. The biggest advantage of this durian variety is that it can be preserved for a longer time, so it is prioritized for export by businesses. Specifically, ripe Ri6 durian can only be kept for about 2 days, while Dona durian in a cool environment can be kept for 10 days and still be of good quality.

As the economic locomotive of the country, strongly developing in industry, trade and services, the Southeast region has the advantage of attracting businesses to invest in deep processing, cold storage, and logistics, contributing to increasing the added value and competitiveness of the durian export industry.

Sustainable industry development

Dong Nai is a province with a large fruit growing area in the Southeast region with a total area of nearly 78.3 thousand hectares of fruit trees. Of which, the large area is occupied by fruit trees with export advantages such as durian, mango, banana, grapefruit... The total fruit growing area of Binh Phuoc province is more than 13.2 thousand hectares with more than 20 types of fruit. In Binh Phuoc province, 31 durian growing chains have been built, of which 20 enterprises have joined with 29 cooperatives to build growing area codes in the province. Binh Phuoc is orienting to develop the durian growing area to 8-10 thousand hectares in the direction of high-tech agriculture, linking the product supply chain for export.

The People's Committee of Dong Nai province has issued a Plan for developing key fruit trees and industrial trees in Dong Nai province until 2025 and 2030. The province focuses on developing 5 key fruit trees, of which durian is leading in growth rate. Binh Phuoc province also develops strategies and plans for developing key fruit trees. In particular, Dong Nai and Binh Phuoc provinces are both in the top in terms of the number of durian growing area codes exported to the Chinese market. Thus, after merging Dong Nai and Binh Phuoc provinces, the new Dong Nai province will be the "capital" of fruit trees in the country. In particular, durian is a key crop with export advantages and high economic value that will continue to be invested in and developed.

Recently, the Prime Minister issued Official Dispatch No. 71/CD-TTg on a number of tasks to promote sustainable durian production and export to the People's Committees of provinces and cities with large durian areas. Among them are provinces in the Southeast region: Dong Nai, Binh Phuoc, Tay Ninh, Ba Ria - Vung Tau, Binh Duong.

The dispatch stated that durian is one of Vietnam's agricultural products with fast growth rate and high export value, making an important contribution to the country's fruit and vegetable export turnover.

According to a report by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, in 2024, Vietnam's durian area will reach nearly 180,000 hectares, with an estimated output of 1.5 million tons and export turnover of approximately 3.2 billion USD, accounting for 47% of the total export value of fruits and vegetables. The durian area increased by an average of 19.5% per year in the period 2015-2024 and continues to expand rapidly.

However, recently, Vietnam's durian exports have encountered many difficulties at certain times, affecting the export scale, added value, and profits of producers and exporters. The main reason is that some countries have applied additional control measures on Vietnam's durian exports. In addition, climate change is becoming increasingly complex; the rapid expansion and increase of durian acreage in some localities is posing many potential risks that could affect the sustainable development of the durian industry.

To proactively respond to the above difficulties, to improve competitiveness and ensure stable and sustainable durian production and export, the Prime Minister requested the Minister of Agriculture and Environment to focus on directing durian production according to the Project on Developing Key Fruit Trees to 2025 and 2030, ensuring supply and demand, meeting the standards of domestic and export markets.

Following the direction of the Central Government, the provinces in the Southeast region are focusing on promoting research, technology transfer, application, and digital transformation in the production, processing, consumption, quality management, and traceability of durian. In particular, localities are attracting businesses to invest in post-harvest processing, cold storage, and deep processing to improve product quality, added value, and competitiveness.

Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dong Nai, Tran Lam Sinh, said that the province is focusing on restructuring the durian industry towards improving quality, efficiency, added value and sustainable development. In particular, the management and supervision of codes for growing areas and packaging facilities in the province have been strengthened to ensure that facilities and units granted codes comply with regulations and meet the requirements of the import market. Guiding and supporting industry associations, enterprises and cooperatives to form and develop sustainable chains in the production - processing - consumption - export of durian.
