This information was presented at the conference reporting on the results of the investigation and assessment of the potential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the forests and seas of Con Dao and the feasibility of building a carbon credit sales model, held on September 5-9.
The conference was organized by Con Dao National Park in collaboration with the joint venture of the Institute of Forest Ecology and Environment - Xuan Mai Green Technology Trading Joint Stock Company.
Con Dao Special Zone, part of Ho Chi Minh City, is an archipelago comprising 16 islands of varying sizes, with a total natural area of nearly 76 km² . Of these, Con Son is the largest island, with an area of approximately 57 km² .
Con Dao possesses a rich forest and marine ecosystem, typical of the tropical island forest type. The total area of forest and forestry land in Con Dao is approximately 6,462 hectares, with a timber reserve of about 775,000 m³ .
The total carbon reserves of Con Dao's forests are estimated at approximately 428,000 tons (natural forests account for 99.2%). In addition, seagrass beds in Con Dao contribute about 15 tons of carbon, mainly concentrated in the Con Son Bay area.
According to the consulting firm, the total potential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, converted from the carbon reserves of the forests and seas of Con Dao, reaches 427,000 tons. Of this, the forests contribute 99.92%.
At the conference, experts, scientists, and managers all agreed that the survey results are an important basis for developing a circular economy plan linked to the conservation and promotion of ecosystem services.
This will make Con Dao a model for green development and sustainable growth, in line with the city's orientation. It will also contribute to fulfilling Vietnam's commitment at COP26 to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
Mr. Pham Hong Luong, Deputy Director of the Department of Forestry and Forest Protection ( Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ), stated that calculating and evaluating the carbon absorption capacity, emission reduction potential, and market entry capabilities are major questions that Con Dao has the potential to answer.

Based on the delegates' feedback, Mr. Luong suggested that the report needed further refinement. "However, we already have all the necessary materials; we just need to polish it and highlight the underlying content," Mr. Luong said.
Mr. Tran Thanh Huyen, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Con Dao Special Economic Zone, said that the report is a necessary quantitative measure to give the locality and relevant sectors a more comprehensive view of emission reduction and carbon credits for Con Dao in the future.
Con Dao National Park is known as one of the nationally and internationally important nature reserves and wetlands, with a diverse and valuable forest and marine ecosystem.
The development and implementation of a task to assess carbon reserves and the potential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the forests and seas of Con Dao is extremely necessary and urgent. This will create a foundation for promoting a circular economy model, aiming towards a green economy and sustainable development in Ho Chi Minh City's only special economic zone.
Orienting the development of Con Dao towards a green and smart island.
This is one of the key points in the concluding announcement issued by the Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, Tran Luu Quang, on September 4th.
According to the announcement's conclusion, the Con Dao Special Zone is a land with a rich revolutionary tradition, carrying significant political and historical meaning, and holding special value for Ho Chi Minh City and the entire country.
On the other hand, Con Dao also possesses full potential and opportunities to attract and mobilize resources for investment and development.
Therefore, the Party Committee and the government of the Con Dao Special Administrative Region need to focus on exploiting and maximizing the existing potential and advantages of the locality; researching and orienting the development of Con Dao in the direction of a "green and smart island".
Develop a plan, clearly define resources, specific tasks, and an implementation roadmap to serve as a basis for comprehensively implementing economic, cultural, and social tasks, contributing to improving the lives of people living and working in Con Dao.
