The information was given at the Conference reporting the results of the investigation and assessment of the potential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from forests and seas in Con Dao and the possibility of building a carbon credit selling model, on September 5.
The conference was organized by Con Dao National Park in collaboration with the Institute of Forest Ecology and Environment - Xuan Mai Green Technology Trading Joint Stock Company.
Con Dao Special Zone of Ho Chi Minh City is an archipelago of 16 large and small islands, with a total natural area of nearly 76km 2 . Of which Con Son is the largest island with an area of about 57km 2 .
Con Dao possesses a rich forest and marine ecosystem, typical of the tropical island forest type. The total area of forest and forestry land in Con Dao is about 6,462 hectares, with a timber reserve of about 775,000m 3 .
The total carbon reserve of Con Dao forest is about 428,000 tons (natural forest accounts for 99.2%). In addition, seagrass beds in Con Dao contribute about 15 tons of carbon, mainly concentrated in Con Son Bay area.
According to the consultancy, the total potential for greenhouse gas emission reduction converted from forest and marine carbon reserves in Con Dao is 427,000 tons, of which forests contribute 99.92%.
At the conference, experts, scientists, and managers all agreed that the survey results are an important basis for building a circular economy project associated with preserving and promoting the value of ecosystem services.
Thereby, making Con Dao a model of green development and sustainable growth according to the city's orientation. At the same time, it contributes to implementing Vietnam's commitment at COP26 with the goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050 (Net Zero).
Mr. Pham Hong Luong - Deputy Director of the Department of Forestry and Forest Protection ( Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ) - commented that calculating and assessing the ability to absorb carbon, the ability to reduce emissions, and the ability to enter the market are big questions that Con Dao is capable of doing.

From the comments of the delegates, he told Luong that the report needed to be improved. "However, we already have the raw materials, we just need to refine and highlight the content," said Mr. Luong.
Mr. Tran Thanh Huyen - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Con Dao Special Zone - said the report is a necessary quantification for the locality as well as the sectors to have a more general view of emission reduction as well as carbon credits of Con Dao in the coming time.
Con Dao National Park is known as one of the nature reserves and wetlands of national and international importance, with diverse and valuable forest and marine ecosystems.
The development and implementation of the task of assessing carbon reserves and the potential for greenhouse gas emission reduction from the forests and seas of Con Dao is extremely necessary and urgent. It creates a premise to promote the circular economic model, towards a green economy and sustainable development in the only special economic zone of Ho Chi Minh City.
Orientation to build Con Dao towards green and smart island
That is one of the contents of the announcement of the conclusion of Ho Chi Minh City Party Secretary Tran Luu Quang, just issued on September 4.
According to the announcement, Con Dao special zone is a land with a long revolutionary tradition, carrying many political and historical meanings, and has special value to Ho Chi Minh City and the whole country.
On the other hand, Con Dao is also a place with full potential and opportunities to call for, attract and mobilize resources for investment and development.
Therefore, the Party Committee and the government of Con Dao special zone need to focus on exploiting and maximizing the local potential and advantages; research and orient the construction of Con Dao development space in the direction of "green, smart island".
Develop a plan, clearly identify resources, specific tasks, and implementation roadmap to serve as a basis for implementing comprehensive economic, cultural, and social tasks, contributing to improving the lives of people living and working in Con Dao.
