Trump's daughter-in-law is about to take an important position in the Republican Party.

Ms. Lara Trump attended the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Maryland on February 22.

Former US President Donald Trump will consolidate his control over the Republican National Committee (RNC), as his daughter-in-law and another ally are set to take top leadership positions, Reuters reported on March 8.

The meeting of RNC members in Houston (Texas) plans to appoint Mr. Michael Whatley, head of the Republican Party in North Carolina, and Mr. Trump's daughter-in-law, Ms. Lara Trump, as RNC chairman and co-chair.

This will play a key role in attracting voters and funding for the US presidential election on November 5.

The move comes after Mr Trump swept most of the Super Tuesday primaries (March 5), forcing his rival Nikki Haley out of the race and ensuring Mr Trump would be nominated.

The reshuffle, which is expected to see Whatley replace RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel, is likely to put more focus on the split over whether the RNC should help pay Trump’s legal bills. Trump’s legal costs and fines have run into the hundreds of millions of dollars.

The appointment of Lara Trump, wife of Eric Trump, as No. 2 at the RNC symbolizes former President Trump's takeover of this important committee.

This is also the first time a family member of a president or candidate has served as RNC co-chair since the late President Ronald Reagan's daughter Maureen Reagan held the position in the 1980s.

Lara Trump has proven herself to be a capable communicator and fundraiser and is well suited for the role, according to Josh McKoon, chairman of the Georgia Republican Party and an RNC member.

“As we enter a presidential election year, we need all the financial resources we can get to challenge an incumbent president,” he said.

One of the most pressing tasks for the new leadership will be money. After posting its lowest fundraising year in a decade in 2023, the RNC had less than $9 million in the bank at the end of January, more than a third of the Democratic National Committee’s $24 million.
