Nicknamed the “elephant trunk kangaroo”, Palorchestes has a long snout like an elephant’s short trunk, but its body is closer to that of a giant kangaroo. Photo: wikimedia.org. Existed more than 2 million years ago. They lived during the Pleistocene period, at the same time as many other giant marsupials in Australia. Photo: flinders.edu.au.
Impressive size. An adult Palorchestes could weigh more than 1 ton and stand nearly 2 meters tall. Photo: nature.com. Feeds on leaves and softwoods. Their tooth structure suggests they were herbivores, mainly chewing on leaves and softwoods in moist forests. Photo: museumsvictoria.com.au.
Their forelimbs are extremely strong. They have large forelimbs with strong, curved claws used to pull branches or dig up roots. Photo: .australian.museum. Initially mistaken for an ancient horse, when first discovered, scientists thought Palorchestes was a primitive horse due to errors in skull reconstruction. Photo: twimg.com.
May have been made extinct by humans. Archaeological evidence suggests they disappeared not long after ancient humans arrived in Australia. Photo: dreamstime.com. Dear readers, please watch the video : Living with Wolves / VTV2
