Nearly 2,000 male volunteers aged 18-45 with premature hair loss to baldness, from various parts of China, were recruited for the study.

The data collected from volunteers were quite diverse, what was thought to be related to male pattern hair loss (MPHL), as well as to endocrine-related female pattern hair loss (FPHL), differing mainly in the area of hair loss (men mainly on the crown, women mainly along the parting line or above the temples).
Hormonal hair loss is generally attributed to genetic factors, anxiety, sleep duration, age, body mass index (BMI), medical history, physical activity, smoking status, diet.
Analyzing the data in detail, scientists from Tsinghua University pointed out the most powerful factor: Diet.
More specifically, the group with the most severe hair loss is the group addicted to sugary drinks including soft drinks, energy drinks, sugary fruit juices, sweetened milk, sweet tea, sweetened coffee... and other mixed drinks containing a lot of sugar.
Scientists found that high levels of reported sugary drink consumption were concentrated in the 13-29 age group, which helps explain why hair loss is haunting modern young people.
The high sugar content of these beverages leads to higher serum glucose concentrations, activating the “polyol pathway,” a mechanism shown to be involved in the biochemical symptoms of endocrine-related hair loss.
Additionally, people who drink sugary drinks tend to eat a high-fat diet, including fast food and snacks that are popular with young people. High-fat diets have been shown in other studies to lead to hair loss.
Additionally, sugary drinks have been shown to affect emotions. Poor mental health is an additional factor that contributes to hair loss.
Writing in Nutrients , the authors say sugary drinks have a number of health risks but the warnings are not being heeded enough. They hope their new findings on the impact on appearance will help young people become more aware of them and cut them out.
