On May 6th, the Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention Department (Cyber Security Department) of the Da Nang City Police issued a warning about a new scam called "Quishing".

Scammers have been exploiting the increasing use of QR codes by people for payments and information lookups. Specifically, they use tactics such as sending promotional emails or text messages containing QR codes, or covering up or swapping QR codes at transaction points. When users carelessly scan these codes containing malicious links, their personal data is stolen, money is lost, or malware is installed on their devices.

According to the Cybersecurity Department, "Quishing" is a portmantein of "QR code" and "phishing." This popular QR code scam differs from other scams that involve sending links to install malware. "Quishing" hides behind QR codes, a seemingly harmless tool that can lead users to dangerous traps. The familiarity and convenience of QR codes easily lower people's guard, creating opportunities for cybercriminals to strike.

In order to warn and contribute to the effective prevention, deterrence, and fight against this type of crime, the Cyber Security Department of the Da Nang City Police recommends that people carefully check before scanning QR codes, always verify the origin and validity of the code, especially with unfamiliar or superimposed codes.

People should carefully observe their surroundings, and at the payment point, they must check to ensure that the QR code has not been tampered with.

In particular, the public should be wary of unusual offers when asked to scan QR codes, and avoid scanning codes that appear to offer overly attractive or inappropriate deals.

People should carefully examine the website URLs they access, ensuring that the web address begins with "https://" and matches the organization's domain name; use secure QR code scanning applications that warn of malicious links; update security software on electronic devices and install additional anti-malware software; and limit sharing personal information.

Citizens should immediately report any suspected fraud to the nearest authorities.
