Game Jam brings together 7 student teams to participate in the challenge of designing and programming a game in 48 hours, under the guidance of lecturers from the Faculty of Computer Science and Technology. With the theme “Only One”, the teams are free to be creative from content to gameplay and graphics.
Impressive products from the race against time
The game “On My Last Leg” won first place thanks to its unique concept: Players control a one-legged character escaping a chasing slug by dragging his leg through a humorous and engaging controller.

Mr. Le Manh Cuong, founder of Tale Weavers Studio, commented that this project has a clever combination of ideas and gameplay, taking advantage of the difficulty of controls to create challenges. The students were very creative in choosing the snail - an image associated with slowness - to become an obsession for the player.
Winning the audience vote, the game “One Shot”, a space combat game, is loved for its simple gameplay but with a certain level of difficulty. “In addition to the impressive storyline, the game is difficult enough to make me want to play again, creating a desire to conquer in players”, commented Mr. Tran Thanh Tung, founder of Board Game Vietnam.
Many other projects also showed careful investment. Some teams were highly appreciated for their player experience such as “Gambler's Right Hand”, “Just Gimme One More Try”, while others attracted attention with eye-catching graphics such as “Blob n Bob”, “Only One”… Although they did not win any awards, these projects still showed potential for development, reflecting the efforts and learning spirit of the teams.

Professor David Holloway, head of the Game Design and Programming and Game Graphics program at BUV and who guided the teams through the game making process, was impressed with the quality of the projects, especially when they were all implemented within a limited time frame.
“I was amazed by the way the students interpreted the theme. Each game had its own unique style and creative gameplay. The collaboration between game programming and game graphics students also helped the projects have better image quality and presentation,” said Mr. David.

Hai Trinh, COO of GameGeek Asia, also highly appreciated the level of completion of this year's products. "The projects are all very good in both quantity and quality. I am very impressed with the new ideas that you guys expressed," said Hai.
Launchpad for future game developers
Going beyond the scope of a competition final, Games Nexus is an opportunity for students to expand their network of connections with businesses and game studios.
The event was marked by quality products, reflecting the thinking, learning ability and outstanding creativity of BUV students. Notably, the winning team with the game “On My Last Leg” were all first-year students from two BUV game programs.

Mr. Huy Dung, production director of Gameloft Hanoi , was also impressed with the students' professional skills, foreign language skills, as well as their proactive and open working attitude.
“I have worked with BUV students interning at the studio and found that the school guides them very well through its training programs. In particular, BUV also introduces the Unreal Engine game programming tool into its curriculum, something I have not seen in any other university in Vietnam. This promises to train the first generation of young game developers to create new, 'purely Vietnamese' and unique products,” added Mr. Manh Cuong.
Dr Ali Al-Dulaimi, Dean, Faculty of Computer Science and Technology at BUV, shared after the event: “We have confidence in the performance of these students. They have everything they need to become leading experts in the industry in the region - from an internationally-standard training program from Staffordshire University, one of the world's leading universities for gaming and innovation, to an excellent teaching team in Vietnam, to a system of state-of-the-art labs and equipment.”
The Game Jam and Games Nexus events once again affirm their role as creative incubators and effective bridges between students and the labor market. With high competitiveness and a real-life experience environment, BUV continues to be an ideal starting point for future talents in the gaming industry in Vietnam.
