Meta cuts about 600 positions in AI lab
Meta is restructuring its artificial intelligence division by cutting about 600 positions at its AI Superintelligence lab, including the FAIR research group and AI product and infrastructure teams.
According to an internal memo, Meta found its current AI efforts to be too cumbersome. AI chief Alexandr Wang said the team would help speed up decision-making and increase the scope of influence of each individual.
Those affected are encouraged to apply for other positions within the company. Wang stressed that these are talented people and Meta still needs them in other departments.
Despite the cuts in some departments, Meta is still actively recruiting for TBD Lab, a new unit focused on AI breakthroughs. Notable new hires include Ananya Kumar (former OpenAI researcher) and Andrew Tulloch (co-founder of Thinking Machines).
