After nearly 2 years of absence, striker Cong Phuong returned to the Vietnamese team in preparation for the match against Malaysia, the final qualifying round of the 2027 Asian Cup.
Talking about his return to the national team , Cong Phuong said: "I received the call-up with calmness and responsibility. This is an opportunity for me to prove myself, and I understand that I need to try harder to respond to the trust of the coaching staff and fans."

Before deciding to include Cong Phuong in the Vietnam national team, coach Kim Sang Sik directly watched the 30-year-old striker play in the match between Binh Phuoc and PVF-CAND, 0-0, in round 19 of the 2024/25 National First Division.
“The fact that the coach watched and directly encouraged me after the match made me feel his sincerity and real concern. That was not only a motivation for me but also for the players who are silently contributing in the First Division,” Cong Phuong said emotionally.
Before joining the Vietnam national team, Cong Phuong had 7 goals in the First Division. Including the National Cup, he has a total of 9 goals for Binh Phuoc this season.
Although he is back in the Vietnam team, this time the challenge for Cong Phuong is huge as he has turned 30. Moreover, the match against Malaysia is predicted to be very tense, deciding the ticket to the next round for both teams.
“I don’t set my goals too high, I just want to try my best. If I have the chance to play, I will play with all I have to contribute to the team and bring joy to the fans,” Cong Phuong affirmed.
According to the plan, the Vietnamese team will gather in Hanoi from May 29 before leaving for Malaysia on June 6. The Vietnam vs Malaysia match will take place on June 10 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
