The event of Union Maritime Company (UK) ordering 2 115,000DWT oil tankers running on dual fuel LNG (liquefied petroleum gas) has opened a new direction for HD Hyundai Vietnam Shipbuilding Company Limited (HD Hyundai Vietnam) . This is the stage where the company will launch ships using green energy, friendly to the environment.

The world's maritime industry is racing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as ships powered by environmentally friendly fuels are continuously being researched and manufactured. This is the direction for the shipbuilding industry in the near future. With this inevitable trend, HD Hyundai Vietnam - a subsidiary of HD Hyundai Mipo Company (under the direction of Chairman Kim Hyeong-kwan), a shipbuilding company under HD Hyundai Group, will officially embark on a project to build a new generation of environmentally friendly ships using wind energy. Thereby, once again affirming HD Hyundai Mipo's leading position in the shipbuilding industry.
Last March, HD Hyundai Vietnam and Union Maritime Company reached a final agreement on the contract to build two 115,000DWT (equivalent to 115,000 tons) oil tankers running on dual fuel LNG, and each ship will be installed with two additional Windwings sail-shaped devices to support the exploitation of wind energy. The design of these two ships is expected to be carried out in 2 years. The first ship will start construction in August 2026 and be delivered in November 2027, the second ship will start construction in November 2026 and be completed in April 2028.
HD Hyundai Vietnam Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (located in Ninh Phuoc Commune, Ninh Hoa Town, Khanh Hoa Province) was established in 1996. This is a joint venture between HD Hyundai Mipo Company and Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation; the company is equipped with 2 dry docks and a 1.4km long wharf on a land area of about 100 hectares. HD Hyundai Vietnam Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. currently has about 5,000 Vietnamese workers and about 60 experts transferred from HD Hyundai Mipo Company to work.
Equipped with dual-fuel LNG engines, which can use both LNG and diesel as fuel, the ships newly built by HD Hyundai Vietnam will become environmentally friendly ships; the ships will not only significantly reduce engine emissions but also increase efficiency during operation. In addition, the ships are also equipped with many environmentally friendly solutions to increase the efficiency of the propulsion engine such as: Hi-PSD (Pre-Swirl Duct), a fuel-saving device exclusively invented by HD Hyundai and Hi-FIN, a device that helps balance the vortex created by the propeller...
In particular, these ships are designed with 2 additional Windwings devices (sail-shaped devices) made of steel and other composite materials with a height of 37.5m; 20m wide manufactured by the UK-based BAR Technologies; they are installed asymmetrically at the bow of the ship. The Windwings devices not only adjust to the wind direction but can also fold or lower when there is a headwind. This feature will significantly reduce the amount of fuel used by the ship during operation. According to BAR Technologies, on an average route, each Windwings sail saves about 1.5 tons of fuel per day, equivalent to a reduction of 6 tons of CO 2 .

It is known that in 2024, HD Hyundai Vietnam received orders for a total of 29 ships (worth 1.62 billion USD), achieving three times the target of 10 ships per year (worth 520 million USD), bringing the total number of cumulative orders to 56 ships, ensuring the company's workload for more than 3 years to come. To achieve the 2024 revenue target of 608.1 million USD and deliver 15 ships, in 2022 HD Hyundai Vietnam invested in installing a 700-ton Goliath crane. In addition, to aim for the plan to build 20 ships/year by 2025, the company is re-establishing the entire factory system, ensuring this goal through continuing to expand infrastructure and improve production capacity.
