The Indonesian women's volleyball team played the bronze medal match against the Philippines at the 33rd SEA Games on the afternoon of December 15th. The team from the archipelago entered this match as the complete underdog.
Over the past year, Indonesia has suffered a dramatic decline. Almost only Megawati has managed to rise to stardom and play abroad in South Korea and Türkiye. Otherwise, they lack any other standout players.
Prior to this bronze medal match, the two teams had met four times in the AVC Nations Cup and the SEA V.League. The Indonesian women's volleyball team had a 100% losing record. Therefore, the Philippines were predicted to win again and claim their first SEA Games medal since 2005.

However, Indonesia put on a very positive performance. Set 1 saw a tense back-and-forth battle. The Philippines reached the set-point but were pegged back to 24-24. Despite being considered the underdog, Indonesia played bravely, forcing the match into overtime. Ultimately, their resilience helped them win the set in a nail-biting 28-26.
With declining physical condition and a change in tactics by the Philippines, Indonesia lost quite easily 13-25 in the second set. At this point, many people thought about a comeback because the Philippines were the stronger team.
But Indonesia fought back strongly in set 3. Their blocking worked exceptionally well to neutralize the Philippines' attacks. Towards the end, Megawati shone even brighter, helping Indonesia win 30-28. Their resilience and fighting spirit then helped them win set 4 26-24, securing a surprising 3-1 victory overall.
This is Indonesia's third consecutive bronze medal in women's volleyball at the SEA Games. Meanwhile, the Philippines continue to suffer a defeat.
