On April 22, speaking with Tien Phong newspaper reporters, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Thang, Vice Principal of HSB School, affirmed that before receiving a Party disciplinary warning (late 2024), Mr. Nguyen Xuan Ky studied for a master's degree in Non-traditional Security and a doctorate in Sustainable Development Management at the school. The school has evaluated Mr. Ky's professional capacity through scientific councils that evaluate theses and dissertations. Mr. Ky is a former student, retired, and participating in work with the school is completely normal.

In response to the reporter's question, being disciplined with a warning in the form of a Party warning, violating the responsibility of setting an example, causing serious consequences for Mr. Nguyen Xuan Ky, how does the school view the "title" of a teacher, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Thang replied: "Can we see the university as a family, if there are children who unfortunately have an accident and return, should they be shunned? Moreover, the university should have a humane perspective. I say this so that we can have a more multi-dimensional, more humane perspective. Meanwhile, in essence, Mr. Ky did not violate the law."

When Tien Phong reporter asked an HSB leader for information about the former provincial party secretary, this person said: "He is in good spirits and wants to work to contribute to students' practice in environmental management."

Mr. Thang assessed Mr. Ky as a good presenter with practical management experience. HSB School aims to train administrative personnel. Mr. Ky has both a doctorate in management and practical management experience, so he meets the school's recruitment requirements. However, up to now, Mr. Ky has not taught at the school as a lecturer. To be able to stand in the classroom, one must go through many challenges and strict conditions, with a selection process. Mr. Thang admitted that in reality, recruiting lecturers with doctoral degrees is not easy. Those with practical experience are even more difficult.

Therefore, Mr. Ky is definitely not teaching at this time. Mr. Thang affirmed that the school needs people who have both expertise and practical experience to share with students through seminars, discussions, program development or connection with businesses.

But should we recruit teachers with "flaws" like Mr. Nguyen Xuan Ky? In response to the reporter's concerns, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Thang did not answer directly but said that even gems have flaws, there can be no perfect person. Standing in aneducational environment, according to Mr. Thang, we need to have a humane perspective, but not cover up. To be recruited to HSB School, we must meet the standards, but we should also give those who have problems the opportunity to correct and contribute to the community.

“Our perspective seems a bit biased and one-sided. Meanwhile, importantly, they are aware and look for opportunities, find places to correct those mistakes,” Mr. Thang said. In universities in particular and educational institutions in general, there are still teachers who violate Party regulations, but that does not mean they are not allowed to teach. That is, there are certain risks. HSB School’s perspective does not paint a rosy picture or blacken it. Schools often give students good experiences, but in fact, painful experiences are also good lessons. They not only teach success stories, but also failures so that students can see life more comprehensively.

Should not be on the pulpit

Dr. Dang Tu An, Director of the Vietnam Education Innovation Support Fund, former Head of the Department of Primary Education (Ministry of Education and Training), said that if a school accepts someone like Mr. Ky, it will lower the title of "Teacher". This is a phrase that refers to a shining example for the young generation and is respected by the whole society. "We are not strict or stubborn, but the teaching profession is selective and picky. There are people who can never be a teacher, a role model, and be considered a teacher in the world.

According to him, Resolution 29/TW states: “recruit people with suitable qualities and abilities into the teaching profession”. Mr. Nguyen Xuan Ky may be a talented person with a high level of training, so he should be allowed to do research, not stand on the podium to lecture to the young. What will parents and students think when a teacher makes ethical mistakes and is not qualified to be a good example for students?

Agreeing with this point of view, some teachers who are currently working at the university shared that Mr. Nguyen Xuan Ky should not be a teacher, because if he is not a good example for students to follow, it will often create the opposite effect if students gossip and talk about him. Students do not respect the teacher who is teaching them and has had shortcomings and been disciplined.
