Traffic human resources in the 4.0 era: Experience is not enough, what is the new "weapon"?

(Dan Tri Newspaper) - In the context of rapid technological development, especially artificial intelligence (AI), the requirements for human resources to develop modern, smart, and sustainable transportation infrastructure have undergone significant changes.

The "key" to human resource training.

Transportation is undergoing significant changes, particularly with the development of urban rail and high-speed rail.

The keynote report at the 6th National Scientific Conference, recently organized by the Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport (UTH), on the topic "Practical Application of Smart Technology in Traffic Safety Management and Monitoring in Vietnam," presented by Mr. Pham Tuan Anh, Director of GTEL OTS JSC, a member of the Global Technology and Telecommunications Corporation (GTEL), attracted particular attention.

This presentation has suggested new directions in the development of smart cities, applying artificial intelligence and big data to urban planning and traffic management, and addressing many other related issues in social activities such as social order management…

Sharing more about the human resource needs in the new era, Mr. Pham Tuan Anh said that in the context of rapid technological development, especially the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), the requirements for human resources have also changed significantly. He particularly emphasized the role of soft skills, especially logical thinking, critical thinking, adaptability, collaboration, emotional management, and, importantly, ethical thinking and responsibility.

According to him, in the context of the ever-evolving AI, the ability to analyze, evaluate, and critically analyze information has become extremely important.

"Now AI is doing a great job, but if we don't have critical thinking and evaluation and just apply it mechanically, where will our value ultimately lie?", he questioned.

In terms of applied specialized knowledge, Mr. Tuan Anh believes that this is becoming increasingly important, even more so than purely technical knowledge.

"Technical skills are important, but more importantly, we need to understand how to apply specialized knowledge to a specific field and how to use it effectively. For example, in the transportation sector, IT professionals need to understand traffic regulations, transportation operations, and the specifics of the industry," he explained.

Answering a question about the trend of recruiting fresh graduates, the Director of GTEL OTS JSC stated that businesses are having to change their recruitment requirements to keep pace with technological advancements, especially AI and automation.

According to him, businesses are no longer considering only experience working with a specific technology, but also focusing on knowledge of the application area and the ability to adapt to the rapid changes in technology.

"Today, you know something, but tomorrow AI will have already done it, and tomorrow you won't need to do it anymore. You will be valuable if you know how to evaluate, manage, and control AI," Mr. Tuan Anh analyzed.

Even those with work experience need to continuously improve their knowledge and skills to avoid falling behind in a volatile job market.

Mr. Tuan Anh affirmed that the value of long-term employees lies in their experience, especially in making decisions based on intuition and experience.

However, no one can "escape" the trend of technological development. His advice to experienced professionals is to proactively update their skills and keep up with technological trends like younger people.

Training follows an applied, interdisciplinary approach.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Anh Tuan, Vice Rector of Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport, also stated that in the period from now until 2030, the transport sector will enter a period of strong restructuring, especially with the development of urban rail and high-speed rail - areas that the State is prioritizing for investment.

The demand for human resources in these two areas will increase rapidly and require high levels of expertise and interdisciplinary skills. In addition, fields such as smart transportation infrastructure, integrated logistics, green transportation, and digital transportation will also develop strongly.

The labor market will shift towards requiring engineers and graduates with technological skills, digital systems management abilities, and innovative thinking.

This places a significant demand on training institutions like UTH to update their curricula, develop interdisciplinary training capabilities, and closely align with the practical needs of businesses and major cities.

"We recognize that AI is not just a tool, but also a technological platform shaping the future of the transportation industry. Therefore, the school has been integrating content on artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data processing, etc., into training programs in many fields such as information technology, transportation engineering, automation, and transportation management," Mr. Tuan shared.

The research team of Le Thi Linh Giang and Than Thi Le Quyen also proposed an open pedagogical approach in higher education in the era of Industry 4.0. The team raised the issue of increasingly flexible and personalized training programs based on practical needs, while teaching methods are being innovated to focus on teaching how to learn, encouraging learners to actively construct knowledge instead of passively receiving it.

Along with that, the development of an open world and the trend of open education has opened up many opportunities to access unlimited knowledge.

With the theme "Science and Technology in Transportation - CTST 2025", the workshop introduced and discussed many innovative ideas, advanced technological solutions, and effective management models. This contributes to improving the quality of training, scientific research, and technology transfer, serving the sustainable development of the industry.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Tien Thuy, Chairman of the University Council of Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport, emphasized that the conference is not only a meeting place for academics but also a gathering place for initiatives and research solutions with high applicability, contributing to the creation of a modern, intelligent, and sustainable transportation system for Vietnam.
