Traffic human resources in the 4.0 era: Experience is not enough, what is the new "weapon"?

(Dan Tri) - In the context of rapid technological development, especially artificial intelligence (AI), the demand for human resources to develop modern, smart and sustainable transport infrastructure has changed significantly.

The "key" to human resource training

Transportation is undergoing dramatic changes, especially with the development of urban railways and high-speed rail.

The keynote report at the 6th national scientific conference, recently organized by Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport (UTH), on the topic "Practical application of smart technology in management and supervision of traffic safety and order in Vietnam" presented by Mr. Pham Tuan Anh, Director of GTEL OTS JSC, a member of Global Telecommunications - Technology Corporation (GTEL), attracted special attention.

This paper has suggested new directions in developing smart cities, applying artificial intelligence and big data to urban traffic planning and management and solving many other related issues in social activities such as social order management...

Sharing more about human resource needs in the new era, Mr. Pham Tuan Anh said that in the context of rapid technological development, especially the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), human resource requirements have also changed significantly. He especially emphasized the role of soft skills, especially logical thinking, critical thinking, adaptability, collaboration, emotional management and indispensable ethical thinking and responsibility.

According to him, in the context of increasingly developing AI, the ability to analyze, evaluate and criticize information becomes extremely important.

"AI is very good at it now, but if we don't have criticism or evaluation and just apply machines, where is our value in the end?", he questioned.

In terms of applied specialized knowledge, Mr. Tuan Anh believes that this is becoming more and more important than pure technical knowledge.

"Technical issues are also important, but more importantly, we must understand how to apply specialized knowledge to which field and how to apply it. For example, in the field of transportation, IT workers need to understand traffic rules, transportation operations and the specifics of the industry," he explained.

Responding to questions about the trend of recruiting new graduates, the Director of GTEL OTS JSC said that businesses are having to change their recruitment requirements to adapt to the development of technology, especially AI and automation.

According to him, businesses no longer only consider experience working with a specific technology but also focus on knowledge of the application field and the ability to adapt to rapid changes in technology.

"Today, you know this, but tomorrow AI will do it, tomorrow you will no longer be needed. You will be valuable if you know how to evaluate, operate and control AI," Mr. Tuan Anh analyzed.

Even for those who have working experience, it is necessary to constantly improve their knowledge and skills so as not to fall behind in the volatile labor market.

Mr. Tuan Anh affirmed that long-time employees have the value of experience, especially in making decisions based on intuition and experience.

However, no one can "escape" the development trend of technology. His advice for experienced human resources is to proactively update their skills and follow technology trends like young people.

Training follows applied and interdisciplinary trends

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Anh Tuan, Vice Rector of Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport, also commented that from now until 2030, the transport sector will enter a period of strong restructuring, especially with the development of urban railways and high-speed railways - areas that are being prioritized for investment by the State.

The demand for human resources in these two areas will increase rapidly and require high-level, interdisciplinary expertise. In addition, areas such as smart transport infrastructure, integrated logistics, green transport and digital transport will also develop strongly.

Labor market demand will shift toward needing engineers - bachelors with technological skills, digital systems management, and innovative thinking.

This places great demands on training institutions like UTH to update programs, develop interdisciplinary training capacity, and closely align with the practical needs of businesses and large cities.

"We identify AI as not only a tool but also a technological platform that shapes the future of the transportation industry. Therefore, the school has been integrating content on artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data processing, etc. into training programs in many fields such as information technology, traffic engineering, automation and transportation management," Mr. Tuan shared.

The research group Le Thi Linh Giang and Than Thi Le Quyen also proposed an open pedagogical method in highereducation in the 4.0 era. The group raised the issue of increasingly flexible and personalized training programs according to practical needs, while innovative teaching methods aim to teach how to learn, encouraging learners to actively create knowledge instead of passively receiving it.

Along with that, the development of the open world and the trend of open education have opened up many opportunities to access unlimited knowledge.

With the theme "Transportation Science and Technology - CTST 2025", the workshop introduced and discussed many innovative ideas, advanced technological solutions and effective management models. This contributes to improving the quality of training, scientific research and technology transfer, serving the sustainable development of the industry.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Tien Thuy, Chairman of the Council of Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport, emphasized that the conference is not only a meeting place for academics but also a place to gather highly applicable research initiatives and solutions, contributing to the creation of a modern, smart and sustainable transport system for Vietnam.
