MP Syed Saddiq, 30, is the first politician to be caned for corruption in Malaysia. The caning is only applied to male offenders under the age of 50, The Star reported on November 9.
After hearing the verdict, Mr. Syed Saddiq, former Minister of Youth and Sports , announced his decision to step down as Chairman of the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda). However, he will remain an MP during the appeal process.
In September, Muda withdrew his support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's Pakatan Harapan coalition after the prosecution dropped corruption charges against Deputy Prime Minister Zahid Hamidi.
At a press conference after meeting with Muda party leaders, Syed Saddiq announced his decision to step down as chairman, adding that Vice President Amira Aisya would take over as acting chairman of the party.
Malaysian Parliament Speaker Johari Abdul confirmed that Syed Saddiq will not be forced to leave his seat as a member of parliament until there is no way to clear his name.
While still a member of the Bersatu party, Syed Saddiq became Malaysia's youngest minister in 2018 when he was appointed minister by then Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad at the age of 25.
In 2020, the young MP was charged with assisting a former Bersatu official in the embezzlement of RM1 million from the funds of Armada, Bersatu’s youth wing. He was also charged with several other offences, including money laundering and corruption.
