Diverse solutions to improve population quality in Hoang Hoa

Hoang Hoa District Medical Center implements an extracurricular program on adolescent reproductive health care communication for students in the district.

To improve the quality of population, Hoang Hoa District Health Center has closely followed the resolutions, directives and guiding documents of the superiors on population and family planning work in the new situation. From there, it has proactively advised the Steering Committee for Population and Development of the district to develop plans to implement programs and projects on population. The District Health Center has also proactively developed plans and implemented population and family planning work in the new situation in accordance with local realities. Every year, the District Health Center has advised the Steering Committee for Population and Development of the district to guide localities to include population and family planning targets in the socio -economic development plan.

Identifying population and family planning communication as one of the key solutions, the District Health Center, commune and town health stations have diversified propaganda work. In addition to propaganda on mass media, billboards, posters or propaganda on loudspeakers reporting on population and family planning activities, the District Health Center also provides leaflets to communes; organizes talks on reproductive health care for adolescents and youth; organizes the launch of a health care club for the elderly, provides consultation and provides population and family planning services for adolescents/youth... At the same time, localities have built a team of enthusiastic and dynamic collaborators covering all communes and towns in the district to closely follow the grassroots, propagate to each household about population and family planning work to raise awareness and action for the people.

The District Health Center also focuses on improving the capacity to perform population and family planning work, and communication skills on population and family planning for the population team. Every year, the center regularly organizes training sessions to improve capacity, communication skills, healtheducation and skills to perform population and family planning work for the population and family planning staff and population collaborators in the area.

Along with promoting propaganda, the District Health Center has fully deployed health - population target programs to localities and people. Currently, Hoang Hoa district is implementing population - family planning programs and projects such as: Project to control gender imbalance at birth and control the rate of increase in sex ratio at birth; project to socialize the provision of contraceptives and family planning/reproductive health services; population communication program; program to adjust birth rate to suit regions and subjects; program to expand, screen, diagnose, and treat some prenatal diseases...

As for the Project on Controlling Gender Imbalance at Birth and Controlling the Rate of Increase in Sex Ratio at Birth, the Center has stepped up propaganda and dissemination on the loudspeaker system. The propaganda content is about the legal regulations and policies of the Party and State on controlling gender imbalance at birth, on implementing gender equality, enhancing the role and position of women to change people's awareness and behavior. At the same time, regularly organize talks on the consequences of gender imbalance at birth for men and women preparing to get married, women preparing to give birth in 37 communes and towns. Organize activities of the Women's Club not to have a third child in the whole district. Through propaganda forms, people raise awareness and action on gender selection at birth, the consequences of gender imbalance at birth.

Doctor Nguyen Tat Trung, Head of the Health Station of Hoang Chau Commune, said: With the characteristics of a coastal commune, with the attention of all levels and sectors, the commune has implemented a project to control gender imbalance at birth and control the rate of increase in sex ratio at birth. Through promoting propaganda and implementing many activities of examination, consultation, and providing services for women of childbearing age, people's awareness of population work has been raised. The results achieved by Hoang Chau commune have contributed significantly to the communes and towns in effectively implementing population and family planning work in the district.

Thanks to the implementation of many programs and projects on population/family planning, the quality of population in the district has been improved. The district's prenatal screening rate reached 67%; the newborn screening rate reached 25%; the sex ratio at birth was 116 boys/100 girls; the rate of contraceptive use reached 67%; the rate of women receiving pregnancy management reached 100%; the rate of elderly people having regular health check-ups once a year reached 75%.

Deputy Director of Hoang Hoa District Health Center Le Trong Tien said: In addition to the achieved results, population work in the district still has some difficulties such as: the sex ratio at birth is still large due to customs, habits and the psychology of families who want to have a son, along with that, the staff in charge of population work at the facility mainly work part-time; materials and drugs of the projects are not enough, leading to difficulties in the implementation process. In the coming time, the District Health Center will focus on solutions to improve the quality of population, strive to complete and exceed the targets on birth reduction, sex ratio at birth, and family planning targets.
