Diversified solutions to implement population work in Ha Tinh city

During her pregnancy, Ms. Vo Dieu Hang (born in 2005, resident of residential group 4, Dai Nai ward, Ha Tinh city) was enthusiastically informed and guided by the ward's population officers and collaborators about the importance of pregnancy health care. She was encouraged to fully perform regular pregnancy check-ups, adhere to a scientific nutritional regimen, and get tetanus vaccinations according to schedule...

Ms. Hang shared: “I am 6 months pregnant, the health of mother and baby is stable. I am grateful for the care and useful advice from the staff of the DS department. Thanks to them, I feel secure and have more knowledge to best prepare for the birth of my child.”

It is known that Dai Nai is the leading locality in implementing population work well in Ha Tinh city. In recent years, the ward has effectively implemented many models and programs such as: Screening project for prenatal and newborn children; health care for the elderly; reproductive health care campaign... to raise awareness and change people's health behaviors, improve population quality.

The locality has also built a team of enthusiastic and responsible population officers and collaborators, regularly organizing talks and consultations in the community, going to each household to propagate population policies. In 2024, Dai Nai ward, along with Thach Quy and Thach Hung wards, are the three localities of Ha Tinh city that have achieved the goal of reducing the birth rate of the third child or more compared to the previous year by 5% or more.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Phong Lan - a population officer (Dai Nai Ward Health Station) informed: “Currently, the ward has 1,724 households with 6,116 people. From the beginning of 2024 to the end of the first quarter of 2025, the number of children born in the whole ward is 82, the total number of couples of childbearing age using modern contraceptive methods is 862. The elderly have regular health check-ups at least once a year, reaching more than 1,300 times... To achieve these numbers, it is thanks to the close direction of the Party Committee, the Ward People's Committee, the close coordination of departments and organizations. Along with that is the sense of responsibility and dedication of the medical staff, population collaborators and especially the response and consensus of the people in the area."

Along with Dai Nai ward, other wards and communes of Ha Tinh city have also made efforts to implement population work in a practical and effective manner. Localities have focused on diversifying forms of propaganda such as: group counseling, individual counseling, distributing leaflets, loudspeakers... to each village and residential group.

Ms. Truong Thi Hanh - DS collaborator of residential group 5 (Ha Huy Tap ward) shared: "To promptly bring the population policy to each family, I often take the opportunity to meet with people at noon or in the evening. I patiently listen to their sharing, answer their questions about family planning, reproductive health care and the benefits of the population policy... Thanks to that, in 2024, residential group 5 achieved the result of 2 consecutive years without having a third or more child."

With a population of more than 196 thousand people (first quarter of 2025) and the characteristic of being the central urban area of ​​the province with high population density, Ha Tinh City faces difficulties in collecting and updating population data due to complex movements in apartment buildings, social housing and boarding houses.

However, the city's population sector has proactively overcome difficulties and promoted communication work on population policies through many activities. The unit has coordinated with the Association of the Elderly, the Women's Union, the Youth Union... to implement reproductive health care activities for women, provide reproductive health knowledge counseling for adolescents and enhance health care for the elderly... In parallel, capacity building for the population staff and collaborators has also received special attention through professional training courses.

Thanks to that, by the end of the first quarter of 2025, the gender imbalance ratio at birth will be 109 boys/100 girls (meanwhile, the gender imbalance ratio at birth of the whole province is 111.56 boys/100 girls); the number of couples of childbearing age using modern contraceptive methods will reach 60% of the annual plan (the whole province currently reaches 13.03% of the annual plan)...

By 2025, the Ha Tinh City Population Department aims to maintain 90-98% of couples of childbearing age using contraceptive methods, of which over 80% will use modern methods. The communication campaign integrating reproductive health care and family planning services will continue to be implemented in 100% of communes and wards. At the same time, the unit will strengthen the management of population data, collect and update accurately and promptly population changes to serve policy making and socio-economic development plans of the city as well as effectively implement projects to improve population quality.
