For about 2 months now, many residential houses have been under construction.

For the past two months, many construction contractors in Ha Tinh City have been facing a "headache" due to a shortage of construction workers, in the context of a sudden increase in demand for housing construction and civil works.

“The shortage of construction workers forced us to contact other construction units to support human resources, especially for important items during the rough construction process. With a workforce of 20 workers (both main workers and assistant workers), I had to make a specific plan and only accept 3 houses during this time to meet the handover schedule with the homeowner,” said Mr. Tran Viet Duc, a construction contractor in Thach Quy ward.

According to Mr. Duc, his construction unit is lacking many main workers to complete stages such as plastering and tiling. Although the salary is quite high, from 450,000 to 500,000 VND/day/person for main workers and 350,000 to 380,000 VND/day/person for assistant workers, many people are still not interested due to the hard nature of the work.

Lack of construction workers can affect the progress and quality of construction.

The lack of construction workers is also due to the fact that many public investment projects are currently being implemented in Ha Tinh City such as building schools, renovating bridges, roads, sidewalks, etc. Therefore, this labor force is being "collected" by contractors to speed up the progress of projects.

Labor shortage is creating many difficulties for construction projects and affecting the progress and quality of works.

Also waiting for workers, Ms. Hien Thuong (Thach Ha ward) shared: “My family just started building a house in early May. Although the price of materials has increased, because we chose a good date, our family still decided to build the house this time. However, in addition to worrying about the price of materials, we are also worried about the scarcity of construction workers. Many days, there are only a few workers on the construction site."

Labor shortage is creating many difficulties for construction projects and affecting the progress and quality of works.

Currently, the foundation of Ms. Thuong’s house has been poured and the construction materials for the rough construction are being gathered. During this period, the workers will work in other houses to meet the contractor’s deadline for handing over the project.

The current shortage of construction workers is partly due to the fact that workers often “jump ship”. Most workers are recruited on a seasonal basis, without clear commitments, so when another place offers higher wages, they are willing to quit their jobs to move to work for the new unit. This fierce competition has pushed up labor costs, causing many construction workers to have the mentality of “standing on this mountain and looking at that mountain”.

Most construction workers work seasonally, so it is difficult for contractors to control them.

To solve the problem of shortage of construction workers, small construction contractors often recruit local people or ask acquaintances and relatives for referrals. This method helps to quickly have more workers, temporarily solving the problem of human resources. However, most of them work on a seasonal basis, so when the agricultural season comes, many people ask for leave to go back to work on the fields. The workers quitting all at once puts contractors in a "half-crying, half-laughing" situation, especially when the homeowner constantly urges them to speed up the progress.

“Our residential construction team currently has more than 10 main workers but is taking on 5 houses in the commune. Due to not being able to find more suitable workers, the contractor had to arrange for workers to take turns completing cross-items on the project and not take on more houses so that the workers can be flexible in the working process,” said Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa, a construction worker in Thach Hai commune (Ha Tinh city).

Construction teams are now having to split up to complete each house's sections.

To solve the labor shortage, many construction teams have had to unite and cooperate, supporting each other in completing projects on schedule.

Contractors also focus on improving the treatment of skilled workers, while actively seeking new workers, especially young workers, by raising wages and ensuring stable jobs. These policies aim to attract and retain human resources, ready to face the challenge of progress.
