Spring rice price 2025: Fluctuates daily, some types are lower than last year

In Khanh Vinh Yen commune (Can Loc district), farmers have entered the peak harvest season. Compared to previous years, this year's harvest season came earlier due to concerns about the impact of extreme weather, often with storms at the end of the crop. Therefore, when the rice reached about 85 - 95% ripeness, farmers proactively brought harvesters to the fields. On the other hand, people also wanted to sell early when the price of fresh rice was still good.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thom (Doai Duyet village, Khanh Vinh Yen commune, Can Loc) said: “My family has 3 hectares of rice fields, 60% of which use glutinous rice variety 98. These past few days, my fellow villagers and I have been focusing on harvesting glutinous rice variety 98 first, selling as we harvest at the field. We are trying to speed up the harvesting process to take advantage of early import to traders because the price of rice this year is very volatile, it can decrease by the day.”

Rice purchasing activities are bustling in concentrated production areas.

Khanh Vinh Yen is one of the localities with the largest area of ​​​​98 sticky rice in the province (the whole commune is 883 hectares, of which 98 sticky rice accounts for 50% of the area), with a rice yield of 3 - 3.5 quintals/sao, providing a fairly abundant output for the market after harvest. According to the people, the purchase price of this rice variety is currently at an average of 6,700 - 6,900 VND/kg, among the highest among local rice varieties. This price has increased compared to the 2024 spring crop by 500 - 700 VND/kg, but it is forecasted to have many fluctuations from now until the end of the crop.

Specifically, the average price of glutinous rice 98 purchased at the field on May 19 was 6,900 VND/kg, and on the afternoon of May 20 it was 6,700 VND/kg. Notably, the price can increase in the early morning and then decrease in the late afternoon. This has a significant impact on local purchasing activities.

At the beginning of the season, the supply is quite abundant, the quality of the rice is quite good, but in general, the price depends heavily on the Northern rice market.

Currently, we are purchasing sticky rice 98 for people at 7,200 VND/kg, 300 - 400 VND/kg higher than the market price. All rice will be dried to meet standards to find high-quality markets. However, the facility is also under a lot of pressure because the largest rice purchasing market of Ha Tinh in the North is unstable, increasing slightly at the beginning of the season but has tended to decrease in recent days; the purchasing demand is also less than before...".

At this time, localities with large areas of 98 glutinous rice such as Can Loc, Nghi Xuan, Duc Tho... are also focusing on harvesting progress to meet the supply for purchasing sources. According to records, the price of fresh rice at the field fluctuates from 6,700 - 6,800 VND/kg.

Traders are actively buying large quantities of spring rice 2025.

Meanwhile, in Cam Xuyen and Thach Ha, traders are looking to buy Khang Dan 18 and Xuan Mai 12 varieties. Without the advantage of good prices like sticky rice 98, the price of Khang Dan 18 and Xuan Mai 12 rice is showing a downward trend, with a purchase price of VND 5,500/kg, about VND 1,000/kg lower than the spring crop of 2024.

In general, this year's rice is very good and easy to buy because of abundant supply. The purchase price is at an average of about 5,500 - 5,600 VND/kg, lower than previous years. This selling price is not as expected, but in general, farmers still make a profit due to favorable production conditions, prices of fertilizers and seeds have not increased...

What we are most worried about is that although it is only the beginning of the purchasing season, consumption in the northern provinces is slowing down, and market demand is likely not as high as in previous years. Meanwhile, the increased cost of loading and transporting rice will make it difficult for the cooperative to purchase 4,000 tons of fresh rice this spring crop."

According to the recommendations of the industry, farmers need to research the market and work clearly with buyers to avoid being forced to lower prices.

According to the Department of Crop Production and Livestock (Department of Agriculture and Environment), to date, the whole province has harvested more than 7,000/59,200 hectares of spring rice. All rice fields have entered the concentrated harvest stage. The average yield is estimated to reach 61.75 quintals/ha, 0.58 quintals/ha higher than the 2024 spring crop.

In the coming days, localities will focus on speeding up the harvest to ensure safety, secure the results of the main crop, and provide fresh rice to the market. According to the recommendations of the industry, farmers need to research the market, work clearly with buyers to avoid being forced to lower prices, and it is best to find reputable sources with strict contracts.
