Does amniotic band affect mother and baby?

My wife is 15 weeks pregnant. Yesterday, my wife went for an ultrasound and the doctor diagnosed that my mother has amniotic bands. I hope the doctor can advise my husband and I about this condition. Does this affect the mother and baby and how should it be treated?

Hello!

Amniotic Band Syndrome (ABS) is a condition in which abnormal fibrous bands appear in the amniotic cavity, which can wrap around or adhere to some part of the fetus in the uterus. Not all amniotic bands are harmful. However, in some cases, it can cause fetal damage such as missing fingers, missing limbs... The rate of severely affected fetuses is very rare (~1/15,000 births).

If the band does not adhere to the fetus, only regular ultrasound monitoring is needed, no intervention is required. If the band shows signs of limb constriction: a closer ultrasound may be needed every 2-4 weeks. Fetoscopic surgery is rarely needed to release the band. Since we do not know your wife's specific condition, it is best to follow the prenatal check-up schedule carefully to have the appropriate treatment plan.

Good luck to you and your husband!
