On the occasion of the 71st anniversary of the Liberation Day of the Capital (October 10, 1954 - October 10, 2025) and the 9th anniversary of the signing of the historic Peace Agreement between the Colombian Government and the FARC guerrilla force (2016-2025), on November 19, the Colombian Embassy in Vietnam presented 25 tamarind trees - a typical tree species of South America - to Hanoi city, with the hope that the trees will sprout and grow, with resilient roots deeply rooted in the soil as a symbol of the strong and lasting friendship between the two countries.

These tamarind trees will be planted at Hoa Binh Park, one of the most prominent and meaningful green spaces in the capital.

This tree planting event is not only an environmental protection activity, contributing to beautifying the landscape, improving air quality for Hanoi residents, contributing to the green and sustainable development of the city, but also a symbol of friendship and long-term cooperation between Colombia and Vietnam.

The selection of the tamarind tree - a native tree of South America - aims to introduce a part of Colombia's unique nature and culture to Vietnam. The tamarind tree is not only adaptable and environmentally friendly, but also symbolizes vitality, hope and sustainable development, reflecting the spirit of peace that Colombia has been striving to build since signing the Peace Agreement.

Speaking at the tree planting ceremony, Colombian Ambassador to Vietnam Camila María Polo Flórez said that when planting these tamarind trees, we are not simply putting the roots of the trees into the ground but are also sending a message of peace, of nature and of a friendship that transcends the ocean.

"In Colombia, the tamarind tree has long been a place of community gathering - a place where people rest, chat and share the joys of life. Today, it has become a symbol of friendship," said Ambassador Camila María Polo Flórez.

“Like peace, growth always begins in silence. These young trees, perhaps a little shy today, with more raindrops on their tips than leaves on their branches – will one day grow strong and become familiar anchors for everyone who visits the park. Peace and nature both need to be nurtured and patiently tended to in order to bloom,” Ambassador Camila María Polo Flórez emphasized.

Mr. Dao Duy Phong - Deputy Director of Hanoi Department of Construction - emphasized that the tree planting ceremony presented by the Embassy of the Republic of Colombia is an important launching bell, continuing the good tradition between international friends and the capital Hanoi in the tree planting movement.

Mr. Dao Duy Phong said that 2025 is a pivotal year in continuing to implement the plan to plant 500,000 urban trees in the 2021-2025 period, according to Program No. 03-CTr/TU of the Hanoi Party Committee.

This is an important step to create momentum for implementing larger goals, towards building an urban green tree system in the 2026-2030 period with the ultimate goal of a green-clean-beautiful Hanoi.

Mr. Dao Duy Phong - Deputy Director of Hanoi Department of Construction - suggested that embassies and international organizations continue to promote tree planting to create green for the capital, join hands to overcome existing problems and promote the socialization of tree planting in traffic routes, parks, flower gardens, urban areas and other public places.

Mr. Dao Duy Phong also encouraged organizations, individuals, and households to actively plant trees, ornamental plants, and decorate their homes with flowers, while also educating their children to keep the city green, clean, and beautiful.

The Saman tree is native to Colombia and is a typical tree that grows in tropical forests. In Colombia, it is called the rain tree. In addition to its important ecological function, the tree also has a very special cultural value because some indigenous communities consider it a sacred tree. For this reason, the image of the Saman tree was minted on ancient Colombian coins.

Hoa Binh Park is a special choice because it is both an important green space of Hanoi and a symbol of peace and solidarity. Hanoi is recognized by UNESCO and the international community as a city for peace with its efforts to preserve culture, history and sustainable development. Planting tamarind trees here connects Colombia's message of peace with Hanoi - a city that always strives for peace and development.

Since 2016, Colombia has signed a Peace Agreement with the FARC, opening up opportunities for reintegration and reconciliation for former combatants into society. The tree planting activity at the Peace Park carries a message of peace, new life and hope, and demonstrates the connection between the two countries through the values of peace, cooperation and sustainable development./.
