The Singapore Government 's latest Population Brief released by the National Population and Talent Division (NPTD) on September 24 said the increase was mainly due to a 5% increase in the number of non-permanent residents, from 1.77 million in June 2023 to 1.86 million in June 2024.

According to NPTD, the increase in non-permanent workers, including work pass holders and migrant domestic workers, has helped provide much-needed services to meet the social and economic needs of Singaporeans , such as supporting caregiving needs and filling occupations that residents are not typically interested in, such as construction work. Singaporean workers continue to take up higher-paying jobs, with employment rising in sectors such as financial and insurance services, information and communications, and professional services.

According to the NPTD report, today, the foreign workforce in Singapore accounts for about two-thirds of the non-permanent population, while the remaining third mainly consists of migrant domestic workers, dependents and students. The birth and marriage rates of Singapore citizens are expected to decline by 2023, while the proportion of the elderly population continues to increase.

Based on the current average growth rate, Mr. Christopher Gee, Deputy Director and Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS), predicts that Singapore will have a population of 6.37 million by June 2030. This figure is lower than the forecast in the government's White Paper published in 2013, which forecasted that Singapore's population would be between 6.5 million and 6.9 million by 2030, thereby planning for adequate housing, public transport, infrastructure, amenities, etc. to meet the essential needs of that population size.

As a “modern, diverse and open” economy, Singapore will need to continue to attract skilled workers, said Mr. Christopher Gee.
