With an area of 17,662 hectares, including 13,320 hectares of strictly protected areas and 4,343 hectares of ecological restoration areas, the Management Board of Pu Luong Nature Reserve (Thanh Hoa) is striving to turn the green forest into an attractive eco- tourism destination.

Trekking through the forest "Conquering Pu Luong peak"

Located at an altitude of 1,700m above sea level, with a cool climate all year round, many waterfalls and beautiful natural streams, along with a primeval forest with a rich flora and fauna system, diverse in quantity and species, Pu Luong peak is gradually becoming an ideal destination for trekking tourism - a form of adventure tourism that combines walking, exploring nature and physical and mental training.

As a new eco-tourism product, the trekking route through the forest "Conquering Pu Luong Peak" is part of the Project on eco-tourism, resort and entertainment in the special-use forest of Pu Luong Nature Reserve until 2030, with a vision to 2045.

The Management Board of Pu Luong Nature Reserve has built specific routes on the route with a total length of about 11km, starting from Pu Luong village and ending at Bang village (Pu Luong commune). Among them, many forest roads have a slope of over 35 degrees, which is considered adventurous, attractive and challenging enough for tourists who love to explore and experience.

Coming here, visitors can choose for themselves the journey "Conquering Pu Luong Peak" in 1 day or 2 days 1 night. Starting from Pu Luong village, visitors will move through terraced fields, cross the Hoang Dan forest - where there is a rare tree population listed in the Vietnam Red Book, pass through landmarks such as Khoai cave, Tham Mo cave, Tiger Tongue rock, nearly 800ha bamboo forest park, Pu Luong airport, Pu Dia hill grass field and reach the landmark "Pu Luong Peak 1,700m."

In these places with beautiful landscapes and wide views, visitors can admire the natural forest ecosystem with many diverse plant species such as white rhododendrons, orchids, thin fruit tea and streams with green mossy rocks... When reaching the top, visitors can see the majestic panorama of Pu Luong - symbolizing the "roof of Thanh land" and experience the moment of cloud hunting, watching the sunset or sunrise on the top of Pu Luong.

In addition, with the 2-day-1-night tour, visitors can camp overnight and enjoy dinner in the mountains and forests with rustic Thai dishes such as grilled chicken, grilled duck, sticky rice, corn wine, banana wine...

Mr. Le Tien Thanh (born in 1986, Hac Thanh ward, Thanh Hoa province) shared that he once conquered Pu Luong peak, which was also conquering himself. Although he had to overcome steep roads and many slippery sections, the results received when reaching the top of the mountain were extremely worthy. Hunting clouds, watching the sunrise and seeing the majestic Pu Luong nature from the top of the mountain were truly unforgettable experiences for him when conquering Pu Luong peak.

Mr. Vu Van Binh, Director of Trust Viet Travel Limited Liability Company (travel business unit) said: Preparing for the peak tourist season at the end of the year, the Company offers many tours such as Pu Luong 2 days 1 night, Mai Chau-Pu Luong-Ninh Binh 3 days 2 nights, Hanoi-Mai Chau-Pu Luong 3 days 2 nights... Many domestic and international tourists choose Pu Luong as their favorite destination. Particularly for the tour "Conquering Pu Luong Peak," the Company always recommends that tourists must have good health, endurance and a steadfast spirit to overcome challenges, overcome their own limits and achieve their goals.

Mr. Le Dinh Phuong, Director of Pu Luong Nature Reserve Management Board, affirmed: The trekking route through the forest "conquering Pu Luong peak" is the first eco-tourism trial activity of the unit, opening an important initial step in linking forest management and protection with sustainable eco-tourism development, contributing to promoting the natural image of Pu Luong to domestic and foreign tourists.

The Management Board of Pu Luong Nature Reserve has mobilized resources to renovate, repair, open trails, and create steps for steep, difficult-to-travel areas so that each trip for visitors is not only a journey of discovery, but also an opportunity for people to better understand the value of the forest and the unique ecosystem here.

Notably, all activities on the trekking route through the forest "Conquering Pu Luong Peak" are designed in the direction of controlled eco-tourism, limiting the number of visitors, not discharging waste, not affecting the landscape and forest environment, in order to preserve the pristine beauty of the Pu Luong special-use forest ecosystem. In particular, the program has the participation of indigenous people, from tour guides, porters (luggage carriers), food processors..., thereby creating jobs and green livelihoods for the buffer zone community.

Tourism development associated with cultural preservation

Possessing the wild beauty of tropical forests and a pleasant, cool atmosphere like Sapa, Da Lat, Tam Dao, in recent years, Pu Luong has attracted domestic and foreign tourists by its unique landscape with terraced fields, ethnic minority villages along streams, majestic limestone mountains, many mysterious, pristine, and attractive caves. Besides, there is the long-standing cultural identity of the Thai and Muong people and delicious, attractive traditional dishes...

These are valuable resources for developing ecotourism, adventure, relaxation and research. However, to turn potential into strength, it requires a synchronous and long-term strategy, from development planning to mechanisms and policies to attract investment, train local human resources and raise public awareness about forest conservation.

Mr. Le Dinh Phuong, Director of Pu Luong Nature Reserve Management Board, said: The unit always determines that tourism activities must strictly comply with conservation principles. Exploitation must not have negative impacts on forests, ecosystems, biodiversity, and the lives of local communities. The goal is to develop nature-based tourism, promote forest protection and development associated with the conservation of indigenous cultural values, create jobs and economic benefits for local people.

The Management Board of Pu Luong Nature Reserve is focusing on investing in upgrading infrastructure, especially the traffic system, as well as creating all conditions to attract businesses to survey and invest in building functional subdivisions such as high-end resorts, animal and plant conservation areas and building tourist routes in the conservation area, connecting with famous tours in the province. From there, diversifying products and services associated with promoting the image of Pu Luong tourism... The unit is also surveying the models of "Forest tourism," "Community tourism," "Research tourism" with the participation of professional travel businesses.

According to statistics from the People's Committee of Pu Luong Commune, there are 67 accommodation and homestay establishments in the area with a total capacity of 2,800 guests/day. Tourism activities are creating regular jobs for about 500 direct workers who are local people and many people indirectly participating in tourism activities.

With a population of about 9,500 people, of which Thai people account for 92%, many households have boldly invested in homestays and provided services to welcome guests. In the 10 months of 2025 alone, Pu Luong commune welcomed about 170,000 visitors, of which about 52,500 were international visitors.

Thanh Hoa province sets a goal that by 2045, Pu Luong Nature Reserve will become one of the professional eco-tourism centers, with synchronous and modern technical facilities, diverse tourism products.../.
