How dangerous is high cholesterol?
High cholesterol is also considered a “silent killer” and is known to affect a person’s overall health, says Dr. Rahul Nikumbhe, General Practitioner at Apollo Spectra Hospitals (in Mumbai, India).
“High cholesterol is also a risk factor for heart disease. Warning signs of high cholesterol include chest pain, dizziness, and slurred speech. Additionally, cholesterol is classified into good cholesterol (HDL) and bad cholesterol (LDL),” Dr. Rahul Nikumbhe analyzed.
Mr. Rahul Nikumbhe also revealed that high LDL cholesterol is dangerous to health and causes artery blockage, reduces blood flow and increases the risk of heart-related complications.
HDL and LDL are affected by a person's diet. High LDL means that a person needs to be cautious about his or her health. According to some studies, Dr. Rahul Nikumbhe asserts that leg pain is also considered a sign of high cholesterol.
The link between leg pain and high cholesterol
The arteries in the legs tend to become clogged with fatty deposits caused by excess cholesterol, leading to a condition known as peripheral artery disease (PAD), explains Dr Rahul Nikumbhe.
“The condition is characterized by narrowing of the arteries, which reduces blood flow to the arms or legs. Furthermore, there is sufficient evidence to prove that people with high cholesterol are at risk of developing PAD. Hence, symptoms such as pain in the lower back, thighs and calves are commonly seen in such people, mainly during exercise or other activities such as climbing or walking for long periods of time,” says Dr. Rahul Nikumbhe.
He also explained that common symptoms of PAD caused by high cholesterol include leg pain, swelling, numbness, non-healing wounds, weakness, discoloration of the legs, etc.
Furthermore, one should note down any changes in the body and report the symptoms to the doctor without delay so that treatment can be initiated and the condition can be controlled in time.
People with high cholesterol are advised to have regular health check-ups to monitor their health status. Treatment will be in the form of medication and lifestyle changes.
Taking medications as prescribed by the doctor without missing a beat, eating a balanced diet, exercising as per expert guidance, quitting smoking and alcohol and maintaining optimal weight are some of the things that Dr Rahul Nikumbhe notes.
