According to the World Health Organization, 80,000-100,000 young people start smoking every day. Smoking is not only harmful to the health of the smoker but also affects those around them, especially in the school environment. Secondhand smoke can cause many serious illnesses, affecting the physical and mental development of students. In addition, early exposure to tobacco can lead to addiction and other negative behaviors. Therefore, building a smoke-free school environment is essential to protect future generations.

Recognizing the importance of preventing and combating the harmful effects of tobacco (PCTHTL), the Quang NinhEducation Department has implemented many synchronous measures, including propaganda about the harmful effects of tobacco in educational institutions from primary to high school. Accordingly, schools in the province have included the content of preventing and combating the harmful effects of tobacco in the curriculum, organized propaganda sessions, and signed commitments not to smoke on school grounds.

In particular, the development of smoke-free school regulations and the integration of these criteria into competition evaluations have motivated schools to implement them seriously. Many schools have become bright spots in this movement, contributing to spreading awareness of preventing the harmful effects of tobacco in the community.

At primary and secondary schools in the province, schools have promoted propaganda work in many forms, such as direct communication, flag-raising activities, integration with extracurricular activities about the harmful effects of tobacco, dramatization by students writing their own scripts and performing skits about the harmful effects of tobacco... From the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year, schools have simultaneously signed a commitment not to violate the law on tobacco control at the launching ceremony of "Building smoke-free schools" .

As for high school students, the age group identified as being easily enticed and enticed to use tobacco, especially e-cigarettes, schools pay special attention, monitor and propagate to keep them away from tobacco.

Propaganda activities on tobacco control, e-cigarettes, alcohol, stimulants and other social evils are carried out regularly in many forms, such as: Integrating into lessons and main subjects; writing and drawing propaganda pictures; propagandizing during flag-raising ceremonies and weekly class activities; signing commitments not to violate laws and regulations on tobacco control; inviting competent authorities to conduct propaganda topics for students... In addition, many students also participate in speaking about the harmful effects of tobacco and e-cigarettes, thereby spreading the spirit of "saying no to tobacco" to friends and family.

Building smoke-free schools is not only the task of the education sector but also the responsibility of the whole society. Close coordination between schools, families and communities will create a healthy educational environment, helping students develop comprehensively in terms of physical and mental health.

In the coming time, Quang Ninh province will continue to promote propaganda and education on tobacco control, and at the same time expand the smoke-free school model. This is an important step to protect the health of the young generation and build a civilized and progressive society.
