Singer Phuong Thanh said she was once "stuck" in a group where she had a conflict with only one person, but because the story involved too many relationships, she chose to remain silent so as not to cause further harm to unrelated people. "I chose to remain silent, to let karma take its course. If I spoke up, the matter would be pushed too far, and innocent people would be hurt," Phuong Thanh said.
It was also during that period that she decided to shave her head and enter the spiritual path. For her, it was a way to face things strongly and decisively: "For a determined person like me, I do not choose to face life in a normal way. I choose to suffer first but not later."
Since 2021, Phuong Thanh has officially returned in a special way: singing for free at field hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic, without pay, just singing to cheer up the sick.
After two years of volunteering, she returned to the stage with new energy, more positive than ever. Since then, Phuong Thanh has been "running shows like going to the market", working both in Vietnam and abroad.
Phuong Thanh is not only a persistent artist but also a mother full of courage and emotion. She describes herself as a "multi-personality" person, strong like a man but also a "crying boss".
"In cinema, the director chose me because I felt sorry for him when he cried," Phuong Thanh revealed. With her daughter - little Ga - she always chooses to accompany her like two friends. "Ga is the greatest love of my life. Wherever Ga goes, I just need to text her: 'Mommy's home, Ga come back to mommy', and she will come back."
At the age of over 50, Phuong Thanh still loves - a love that is deep, gentle, and full of contemplation. "I still love. Every day I look at that person's picture, and feel happy. For me now, love must be a predestined relationship from a previous life. At this age, if there is not enough predestined relationship, even if I want to open my heart, I cannot."
She doesn't need noisy or hasty love, but chooses to hold on to her emotions with her eyes and her heart: "I love deeply and far. I love with my soul, I no longer love with my body like when I was young."
Phuong Thanh admits that she is a playboy but not a philanderer. "I am charming, but I don't open my heart easily. I'm just afraid that people will truly love me. Because if someone comes looking for me out of love, I will come back."
For her, "love" is a bigger word than "love", because it carries sacrifice, empathy and long-term commitment. "Outsiders can love you, but only the person who loves you deeply enough to make up for all the things you lack."
Looking back on 35 years of singing, Phuong Thanh said she has no regrets but is proud: "I once said I was out of date, because time is a phase. I don't regret yesterday but I am proud. A singer who used to be very ugly and didn't know how to do make-up, but was once famous everywhere. That is a precious memory."
Phuong Thanh feels lucky that since becoming famous in 1997, nearly 30 years have passed since she witnessed many generations of artists become famous. From the generation of Lam Truong - My Tam - Bao Thy to KICM - Mono, she has had the opportunity to collaborate and learn. "Social energy changes every day. If you don't learn and open your heart, you will be left behind. I live in the present and learn from new generations" - she said.
Phuong Thanh also affirmed that she no longer needs to do shows like those at stadiums to prove herself. "I sing small shows, enough to live and enough to be happy. There was a time when I was most successful when I was most lonely. Now, I choose a gentle journey, living comfortably and for art."
Regarding the recent noise, she chose to stay silent to let the storm pass: "In the past, I would have been blunt. Now I choose to be gentle, to ease my heart and others' hearts."
