In just over a week, Hanoi students will enter the summer vacation of the 2024-2025 school year. Temporarily leaving school, they will participate in fun and recreational activities or stay at home with their families, or even stay at home alone without adult supervision or care, thereby posing a potential risk of unnecessary accidents and injuries. In order for the summer vacation to be both beneficial and safe, while also helping students rest and regain balance after a stressful and difficult year of study, the cooperation of the whole family, school and society is needed.

Many summer worries
Many parents are concerned about how to keep their children safe, healthy, and productive during the summer vacation. Some take their children to their grandparents’ house, while others look for courses to help their children develop life skills. Some parents also take advantage of the summer vacation to reinforce their children’s knowledge before entering the next school year.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Van (Bac Tu Liem District, Hanoi) said that her family has 2 children who are both in primary school. Every summer vacation, she takes her children to her paternal hometown and then to her maternal hometown. However, she is still worried about the risks of accidents that may occur.
“If we bring our children to our grandparents’ house, we can rest assured about food and drink, but we worry about daily activities. Our grandparents’ house is in the countryside, with many rivers and lakes, while our grandparents are old and cannot take care of our children continuously. If we leave our children in the city, they will be exposed to TV and phones all day long, which will greatly affect their mental health,” said Nguyen Thi Van.
Mr. Nguyen Cong Tho (Hoan Kiem district, Hanoi) chose a military semester course for his son who just finished 7th grade. “There are too many invitations from social networks or by phone, I have no conditions to verify which facility is reputable and trustworthy. Through friends' introduction, I chose a 10-day military semester course for my son. Hopefully, my son will be more disciplined and know how to exercise better through this course,” said Mr. Tho.
In preparation for the summer vacation of the 2025-2026 school year, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training has issued a plan to organize summer activities for students to raise awareness, responsibility and attention of schools, families and society in caring for, managing and educating students; in which, it especially emphasizes the role of coordination between schools, localities and families in organizing a summer vacation to ensure safety and care for students.
According to teacher Vu Thi Huong Lan, Principal of Ly Thuong Kiet High School (Long Bien District, Hanoi), to ensure the safety of students during the summer vacation, the most important thing is still traffic safety and drowning prevention. Although students at this age are older, they often have thoughtless, foolish and unexpected actions that make it difficult for parents to manage and monitor closely.
“In the parent meeting to summarize the 2025-2026 school year, the Board of Directors asked homeroom teachers to discuss this content with parents, focusing on coordinating information or activities during the summer. During the summer, the school will arrange for students to come to school 1-2 times a month to participate in summer activities. They will practice folk dancing, do physical exercises at school, and compete between classes and grades. Students will interact and exchange and will not feel left out during the months of summer vacation,” said teacher Vu Thi Huong Lan.
Coordinate with management
During the summer vacation, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training encourages schools to create conditions for students to use the facilities of the unit such as libraries, gyms, stadiums, swimming pools, etc. so that they can review, read books, read newspapers, look up documents, practice and play. Some primary schools in the inner city have informed parents about organizing learning clubs at school such as: physical development, art, skill development, etc. Students will study all day at school, practice skills, foster courage, and participate in creative activities. At the same time, parents can be completely assured that their children are managed and cared for at school all day.
In the suburban areas of Hanoi - where there are many rivers, lakes, and ponds, there are many potential safety risks for students when they lack adult supervision, and their curious and active nature can easily lead to unfortunate accidents such as drowning when bathing in rivers, lakes, or playing near dangerous areas. In addition, traveling on deserted roads with little public transport also increases the risk of traffic accidents and unsafe situations.
Teacher Pham Thi Thu Ha, Principal of Nam Phuong Tien Secondary School (Chuong My District, Hanoi) said that because the area has many rivers and lakes, before each summer vacation, during parent meetings, the school spends time communicating about potential risks; especially emphasizing the role of parents in proactively and effectively managing and educating their children.
“Parents need to regularly remind and guide their children to recognize dangerous areas, and absolutely not to approach or bathe without an adult. In addition, parents should arrange time to supervise or assign adults in the family to monitor children's play activities, especially in deserted areas. In addition, they should create conditions for their children to participate in useful summer activities in the locality such as swimming classes, life skills clubs or community activities, which both help children develop themselves and ensure safety. The most important thing is to build close relationships and talk regularly so that children always feel cared for and are willing to share the problems they encounter,” said teacher Pham Thi Thu Ha.
For students to develop comprehensively, the summer vacation is very important. However, to create a safe and useful summer for children, parents should make wise choices so that their children have time to rest, relax, and have the opportunity to pursue their passions and interests because that is when children learn many useful things that they cannot learn at school. In addition, parents can take advantage of their annual leave during the summer to explore new lands or cultural areas right in the locality where they live with their children.
For families living in the city, parents should take their children back to the countryside to experience rural life, and at the same time be closer to grandparents and relatives; let their children practice at home by cooking, cleaning the house, and pay close attention when they use electronic devices such as computers, smartphones, iPads, etc. to avoid children becoming "addicted" to games or watching movies continuously, affecting their health and spirit.
