Dong Thap The nearly 21 km long Khai - Doc Phu Hien Canal connecting Tien and Hau rivers is proposed to be dredged, expanded, and the bridge system upgraded with a total investment of nearly 2,300 billion VND.
The proposal has just been submitted by Dong Thap province to the Prime Minister to create an important freight transport route for the Mekong Delta. Along with dredging, the project will also build embankments to protect river banks, residential roads and a system of signs.

Muong Khai - Doc Phu Hien Canal passes through Lai Vung, Chau Thanh districts, Sa Dec city of Dong Thap province. This is the shortest waterway connecting Tien and Hau rivers. However, the canal bed is 25-40 m wide, less than 2 m deep, has many curved and narrow sections, and the bridge clearance is less than 3.5 m, making it difficult for large ships to navigate.
According to Dong Thap provincial authorities, to implement the project, it is necessary to clear 130 hectares of land, relocate and resettle more than 1,000 households. The project is expected to be completed after 4 years of construction.

After upgrading, the canal, which is considered the "Suez Canal" of the West, will meet the standards of a level 3 inland waterway. The project will help shorten the distance between the Tien River and the Hau River to 20 km, and 45 km closer when going from Sa Dec port to Cai Cui port of Can Tho city, estimated to reduce transportation costs by 30%.
Currently, Lap Vo - Sa Dec canal is the main waterway connecting Tien River - Hau River, 38 km long. However, the route is overloaded with nearly 160,000 vehicles passing through each year, transporting 27 million tons of goods.
