According to Dr. Smita Nagaonkar, Consultant and Coordinator, ENT, Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital, India, many of us are so used to using earphones that we sometimes fall asleep with them on. While doing so occasionally is harmless, making it a habit can pose some health risks.
Risk of ear infection
“Wearing headphones for long periods of time while sleeping can increase your risk of developing an ear infection. This is because moisture accumulates in the ear due to prolonged use of headphones, leading to the growth of bacteria or fungi in the ear canal,” says Dr. Nagaonkar.
Long-term effects of wearing headphones for long periods of time
According to Dr. Nagaonkar, long-term side effects of wearing headphones while sleeping can include hearing loss or damage.
Additionally, listening to music at high volumes for long periods of time can damage the structures in your ear, leading to hearing problems over time. Furthermore, the constant pressure on your ears while you sleep can be uncomfortable and can potentially lead to problems like earaches, tinnitus, or headaches.
How to use headphones safely?
Loud noise can damage the tiny hair cells in your inner ear that help you hear. Headphone use can be a major cause, according to Harvard Health Publishing, as many headphones can reach volumes above 105 decibels (dB), which can cause hearing damage in just a few minutes. A safe listening level is generally considered to be below 70 dB.
Dr. Nagaonkar recommends using headphones or earphones only at a volume level below 60% of the device's volume and for less than 60 minutes.
